A Powerful Visit from Old Boy John Brogden

Last Thursday during our assembly, our school had the privilege of welcoming back a distinguished Old Boy, John Brogden, who shared his powerful and deeply personal story with our students. John, a former student of our school, returned not only as a successful professional in business, public sector and non-for-profit organisations, but as someone who has walked through significant personal struggles and come out the other side with purpose, clarity, and a commitment to helping others. His story resonated strongly with our boys because of his honesty and courage in sharing the challenges he has faced during his life.

During his address, John spoke openly about his journey with mental health and the darker moments that shaped who he is today. It was inspiring to hear someone speak so courageously about the things that are often left unsaid. In doing so, he reminded us all that struggles are a normal part of life, and that acknowledging them is a sign of strength—not weakness.

He left a lasting impact by challenging the boys to check in on their mates, to speak up when they’re not okay, and to never underestimate the power of simply being there for someone. In a world where stereotypes around masculinity can prevent men from opening up, John’s message was a much-needed reminder that vulnerability and relationships through connection are vital.

John also spoke with pride about the legacy of the College, even bringing his blue cap, and the values the College instilled in him, the friendships he formed, and the lifelong community that continues beyond graduation. His return reminded us all that our College is more than a place of learning; it’s a foundation for future prosperity in life, one built on support, compassion, and courage.

We are incredibly grateful to John for his time, honesty, and for the lasting message he delivered to our students. Let’s continue to carry that message forward—to look out for one another, to speak openly, and to build a legacy of connection and care that lives on in every student who walks through our College gates.
