Student Excellence Update

On Monday 6th May SKiPPS was excited to host the Gifted and Talented Ignite program run by G.A.T.E.Ways as part of our Student Excellence Program.

Visiting teachers ran two sessions titled Mind: BLOWN involving hands-on workshops with selected students from Year 1 to Year 6.

Students were selected by their specialist and classroom teachers based on their strengths in intellectual curiosity, reasoning and thinking skills, and their ability to show alertness and respond quickly to new ideas, enjoy hands-on activities and exhibit keen observation skills.

Quotes from participants;

At GATEWays we saw 3D model of the brain which could read a person’s brainwaves through a wireless headpiece. If the lights were green, you were calm. If it was blue, you were unfocused or meditating and red was stressed or trying to solve a problem. Red meant your brain was really working!

I thought it was really fun to practise thinking in a different way. Thinking is something that comes so automatically it was interesting to question how you think. I really enjoyed when we did the activity with a ball of yarn. We each had to think of a connection to the word ‘animals and pass the ball of yarn around. At the end when everyone had made a unique connection it make a really cool web of ideas.

We had to brand pet rocks. Leo and I make a company called ‘Therapy Rocks’ which combined a name for the rock with a phrase promoting therapy. The two main rocks were Dwayne Rock and Johnson Rock. We had to use ideas and work together to create a new brand
