It’s hard to believe that not only are we in our final week of Term Two, but we are already half way through the year! This time of year may at times seem a bit harder than the others as we wake up for our days braving the chilly mornings, we are very aware and trained with our schedules and our days are full with our responsibilities and commitments. We know how easy it is to feel tired and we need to remember to rest, in whatever form that looks like.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30
Taking a rest can look different for each of us. Some may take that well deserved holiday, others will turn the alarm off in the mornings. I wonder what rest will look like for you? For me, rest will be finding time to connect with family and friends, finding the time to read the three books I have in my "to be read" stack and to get back into my regular Pilates classes. We know taking breaks are important – Jesus taught us that.
“By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.” – Genesis 2:2-3
In the New Testament, Mark 4, Jesus sleeps on a boat despite the tumultuous storm raging around him. And in Luke 10:38-42, we hear the story of two sisters, Mary and Martha. Martha is busy preparing everything for Jesus and Mary sits at his feet. When Martha inquiries about getting Mary’s help, Jesus tells her that Mary chose what was better.
I hope that families find the rest they deserve these holidays and I look forward to hearing about these next term.
