STEM Club Activity – Making Scented Candles

During lunch time on Thursday 20 June, a group of Year 12 students under the leadership of Madeline Wilson, ran an activity on making scented candles from soy wax.

During this activity, students used some of the skills that they have been taught in their science classes such as lighting and using Bunsen burners, using a weighing balance to measure masses and a thermometer to measure temperature.

The lab was full to capacity and it was so inspiring to see students from all year levels engaging in this activity during their lunch time.

On Tuesday 25 June, students will return to the lab to pick up their candles and to engage in a discussion regarding the science and issues of sustainability, related to the making and using of the candles.

Here are a few words from Madeline Wilson regarding this activity.

“Today in STEM club we made soy wax scented candles from scratch!  Everyone who participated was able to customise their own candle with a different colour and lavender scent, and they can take it home when it has set.  I think that everyone had a great time, and it was so good to see everyone from all year levels getting involved in science activities at school and having fun with their friends!”
