Sporting Achievements

Division & Eastern Metropolitan Regional Cross Country

A BIG CONGRATULATIONS to our 13 marathon runners who competed at the Knox Division Cross Country Championships on Wednesday 29th May at Mirrabooka Reserve. The 2km and 3km course was new and tough for our students but each of them paced themselves well, giving every ounce of their strength to finish with a good result. They should all be extremely proud of their efforts on the day, particularly our Year 5 student who came from a fun -filled adventurous camp to compete on the day. Their achievements are listed below:

One outstanding result from the day was from Shanisse Mathes who came 11th in the 12 year old Girls 3km race.

This advanced her onto the Eastern Regional Metropolitan Cross Country Championships at Yarra Valley Racecourse. With grass and mud up to her ankles and steep hills to race up, she pushed through and finished 57th overall, a tremendous outcome making her the 57th fastest 3km runner across all schools in the metropolitan east side of Melbourne. CONGRATULATIONS SHANISSE!!! The St Simon’s community is very proud of your achievement!!!

Junior Hoop Time Basketball Results- Runners Up for the Girls & 3rd Place for the Boys

On 7th June, two teams of very dedicated and skilled Year 3 and 4 basketballers competed at the Years 3–4 Hoop Time competition at State Basketball Stadium.

Amidst tough competition, our team’s combined their skills to make good transitions up the court with the ball and high percentage shots from open looks and drives to the basket.

Throughout the round robin, our boys had a mixture of results with two wins and two loses. There was some great rebounding from our taller boys, Ruben A and Tyler L and excellent shots at goal coming from Cohen V and Tyson L. Even though the boys didn’t make it to the finals, they still came third on the ladder.

Our girls only had 3 teams in their All Star competition this year. After every game, they seem to make strong improvements. A strong offensive and scoring performance from Samia D gave the girls team a lift to be competitive. Our girls were able to make the Grand final but lost in the last 10 seconds by only 2 points.

Congratulations to our basketball stars and their coaches for this remarkable effort at this level of competition! We hope their successes inspire them to continue to build their passion for the game of basketball.

Knox Division AFL Girls Championships

We are thrilled to announce the remarkable achievement of our school's AFL Girls team, who have secured an outstanding 3rd place in the recent Knox Division AFL Girls championships.

The Girls AFL team, led by Mr Camerino, entered the Championships with high spirits and a strong sense of teamwork. Their journey began a few weeks before the competition with rigorous training sessions, where they honed their kicking, marking, and strategic gameplay under the guidance of their coach.

The girls start the day with a win with key goals from Zoe B, Alissa B and Lilliana C. More excitingly Layla M was jumping for joy for kicking her very first competition AFL goal. With the victory lifting the teams morales, their second game was won comfortably with notable goals from multiple students, even 2 goals from Abigail G. In the third round robin match, our school girls scored many behinds but key goals from Monique K, Misha H and Scarlett W gave a comfortable win with a scoring of 3.6.24 to 0.

In the finals, the competition was fierce, with teams from across the Knox region showcasing their talent and passion for the sport against our school. Despite the challenges, our team demonstrated resilience and perseverance in every match they played.

In the quarter finals, our girls fought hard to get the ball into the forwards line. With tense moments within the game and any team scoring, it all came down to a free kick given to Abigail G in the dying last seconds in front of goal in a sudden goal extra time. With every Lysterfield player jumping up and down to make her miss, Abigail was able to seal a victory with a behind after the extra time siren. It was a highlight to see the camaraderie come out in this game as they all ran in to celebrate their victory.

Quickly the girls made their way to the Semi final which was quite challenging as fatigue started to set in. Though the girls pushed through to shrug strong tackles and make long attempts to kick the ball forward, their opponent was able to kick two goals against us.

This led our girls to play a 3rd place playoff final. The girls finished their final game strong with a victory to come third place amongst 16 schools in the Knox area.

Another grand highlight to finish off the day was the announcement of Abigail G as the best and fairest player in our pool competition games, a tremendous accolade which topped off a momentous day of Girls footy.

As we celebrate their successes, let us also acknowledge the invaluable support of our school parents and supporters whose encouragement and cheers have fueled the team's spirit throughout the day.

Congratulations to each member of our AFL Girls Team for their outstanding achievements and for inspiring us all with their passion, dedication, and sportsmanship!
