Congratulations to Grace Outhwaite in Year Eight,

one of this week’s winners for the Premier’s Reading Challenge weekly prize draw!  Each week every student who has logged a book goes into the draw, winners are then randomly selected. Grace is one of ten lucky winners who has received a $60 Fremantle Press book voucher.

Great work Grace!

I encourage all our students that have entered the challenge to keep forging ahead with your reading and entering your books online. There is still time to register if students choose to do so.

Djinda Visit

This week we welcomed the Monday Djinda class into the library for the first time to meet Library Lion. The children sat and listened to “I’m a Dirty Dinosaur” story, enjoying joining in with Dirty Dinosaur’s actions. The enjoyed having their first look at all the books on display.

Book Week update

Book Week will be here before we know it! GSG will celebrate Book Week in Week Six of Term Three.

The National theme this year is “Reading is Magic!”

We will be having our Primary Book Week parade on the Thursday 22 August of Week Six at 9.00am in the Multi-Purpose Sport Complex, however, this will be a whole school dress up day.

Book Week will run from Tuesday 20 August to Friday 23 August, following the boarders long weekend.

We are very excited to announce that in conjunction with Paperbark Merchants, our local bookstore, we will be holding a Book Fair at the same time. Having our Book Fair during Book Week will ensure a wonderful celebration of reading. Collaborating with Paperbark Merchants means we can offer books of excellent quality for our children.

I am a Teacher Librarian and for me Book Week is one of the most fun times of the year and one which is so important to building literacy!  For those who are unaware teacher librarians are uniquely qualified with both teaching qualifications and qualifications in librarianship. This is valuable because curriculum knowledge and pedagogy are combined with library and information management knowledge and skills.

Teacher librarians support and implement the vision of their school communities through advocating and building effective library and information services and programs that contribute to the development of lifelong learners.  I am committed to maintaining literacy as a high priority, engaging students in reading, viewing and listening for understanding and enjoyment.

Holiday Reading and the Premier’s Reading Challenge

Many students are already talking about and planning their holiday reading. For Primary School students engaged in the Premier’s Reading Challenge, this is a great time to catch up and add to their list in this challenge.

For older students selecting some reading material is a great way to relax and wind down after a busy term. With winter upon us, finding a warm spot with a good book is an excellent pastime.

Wilson News

On 18 June, Wilson celebrated our annual Wilson Day throughout the whole school.  The theme was ‘Show your Colours’ which all students took in their stride, coming dressed in their team uniforms, colours of their favourite sporting club, or even just their favourite colour.

On Tuesday morning the hallways were illuminated by a vibrant rainbow of colours of sporting teams and clubs. Our goal was to raise money for Young House, an organisation that provides a bed, food, and a safe place for homeless youth in Albany.  We agreed that it was a very worthy cause and hoped to carry on from support Wilson House provided to them last year. We are very pleased to be able to donate to this organisation which has had a profound impact on struggling youth in Albany since opening its doors in 1986.

At lunchtime, Wilson Year Twelve students took on the teachers in a volleyball match in the gym. The game was strongly supported, and a passionate and enthusiastic atmosphere was created, the gym overflowing with students. These numbers were somewhat supported by the opportunity of shelter from the rain outside, but mainly in anticipation of watching the teachers uncoordinated volleyball skills. Somehow, and to our dismay, the teachers came out on top, two sets to nil. We sold our traditional ice cream and strawberries to feed the supporters, further fundraising for Young House. It was quite a hit across both Secondary and Primary School, despite the rainy and cold weather.

We are very excited to say that we raised a total of $850 for Young House, which will go a long way for this organisation.

A big thankyou to all the students and teachers who helped to set up on the day and behind the scenes, to the Wilson Years Eleven and Twelve students for collecting money and selling ice creams and to everyone from the Djinda to Secondary School for so generously donating and supporting our day.
