Year Four
Dear Year Four Families,
Our Year Fours have embarked on an exciting journey with their new Unit of Inquiry under the Transdisciplinary Theme: How We Organise Ourselves.
Central Idea: Urban planning reflects community survival for future growth.
Students will be spending time learning about urban planning and the needs of a community. Then putting their knowledge into practice by planning and creating a city of their own.
To launch this unit, students used coordinates on a school map to locate all the words of our central idea and then working out their correct order.
Reading
In Reading, we have embarked on an exciting author study focused on the works of Jeannie Baker. We have delved into her captivating books, including "The Story of Rosy Dock," "The Hidden Forest," and "Where the Forest Meets the Sea." Using a range of reading comprehension strategies, students have been uncovering the rich themes and striking vocabulary present in her stories. Through close reading, they are exploring her use of descriptive language and developing a deeper appreciation for her storytelling techniques.
Writing
Our writing journey has been both exciting and educational. We began with recounts, where students followed the writing process to focus on selecting and narrowing their ideas, then learned to explode a moment using their senses to create vivid and engaging narratives. Following this, we explored various journalistic text types, diving into the unique features and structures of news articles. Through these activities, students have developed a keen understanding of how to craft compelling stories and informative articles, honing their skills as both creative writers and budding journalists.
Mathematics
In Mathematics we have begun our location and transformation unit. Students have been exploring the elements needed to read and create maps. Students have enjoyed being creative when designing their own treasure maps and walking to Tribeca Village to inspire them in creating a map of our local area.
