Year One

2024

Dear Year One Community,

We would like to say a massive welcome back to the school for Term Three.

In Reading this week, our students are honing their reading comprehension skills, with a particular emphasis on answering questions using full sentences. This not only improves their understanding of the text but also enhances their writing clarity and coherence. Students are encouraged to restate the question in their answers, ensuring they provide complete and thoughtful responses. Parents can support this at home by asking their children open-ended questions about their reading and encouraging them to answer in full sentences.

In writing, our students are diving into the world of procedural texts. These texts, which include instructions, recipes, and manuals, help students understand and practice writing clear, step-by-step directions. This genre emphasises the importance of sequencing and clarity when writing. To reinforce this learning at home, you might ask your child to write out the steps for a simple activity, such as making a sandwich or planting a flower.

In Mathematics this week, we focused on mastering multiplication using arrays. Arrays, which are sets of objects arranged in rows and columns, provide a visual representation that helps students understand and solve multiplication problems. This method supports the development of mental math skills and lays a strong foundation for more advanced mathematical concepts. Encourage your child to practice by arranging objects at home into arrays and writing out the corresponding multiplication sentences.

In our inquiry unit, students are exploring the changes in our local community. Throughout the week we showed students pictures of our local community over 100 years ago and brainstormed what has changed over time.

  • Students are expected to bring their satchel to school every day filled with their take-home reading books, diary, and homework book.
