Green Team News

This week, the Green Team learnt that gardening outside in winter can be challenging, especially when a cold wind is blowing and the top temperature is 11 degrees (and it feels like 5.8 degrees). After a quick visit to Brendan’s Garden to observe any growth from our seedlings and bulbs (and weeds), we headed into the multi-purpose room to plant some seeds in mini greenhouses.

Each student had the opportunity to plant seeds of a vegetable and herb they would like to grow. The choices of vegetables were; corn, carrots or pumpkin and the herbs were; parsley, basil and coriander. The students were amazed that the seeds would germinate indoors in the mini greenhouses. We are all hopeful that in 12 weeks time we will have healthy seedlings ready to be planted in Brendan’s Garden.

Here are some photos of the students planting their seeds and the garden beds in Brendan’s Garden. We are especially proud of our broccoli and cabbages and can’t wait until they are ready to be harvested.

Congratulations to 5/6W!

Every term in art, the classes from years one to six compete for the ‘Art Class Masters’ trophy. The students need to work as a team to get the most points during art classes. Last term the winners were 5/6 W. Well done team!

Science - Rockets (Year 3 to 6)

To conclude our topic on Earth and Space Science the Years 3 to 6 conducted a rocket experiment. We used a film canister as the rocket and the baking powder and vinegar as the active ingredients to propel the rocket.  The variables we kept the same were the size and shape of the container and the amount of baking powder.  The variable we changed was the amount of vinegar.  Some rockets had ¼ of the canister of vinegar, some ½  and some ⅓ . We found that by filling  ⅓ of the canister with vinegar provided the ideal amount to react with the baking powder and also built up enough gas to propel the canister the furthest.

Slime (Foundation, 1 and 2)

As a fun activity to conclude Term Two the students from Foundation to Year 2 had the opportunity to make slime. We worked through the material needed as a whole class and then the students in groups were given each of the necessary materials and they had to take turns mixing them up.  The students worked cooperatively and were able to successfully complete the experiment.  This proved to be a very popular activity!!!
