ARMATURES (Sculpture from the inside out) with Carolyn V Watson
7-Week Workshop l Term 3 2024 l Friday 2:45 pm - 4:15 pm l $190
Carolyn V Watson is a Meanjin/ Brisbane based artist who has worked across the mediums of painting, drawing and sculptural assemblage.
An alumni of QCA, Carolyn has exhibited extensively throughout Australia over her 20 years of practice and her work is held in national and international collections. Carolyn’s work has been selected as a case study for Art as Alternate in the 2nd edition of The Creative Inquiry Textbook.
Students will develop a range of fundamental armature construction techniques and new approaches to the sculptural form, using methods of wire construction, assemblage, and the importance of the repeated line. The aim of the program is to inspire students to develop a series of well-constructed armatures and how the choice of materials and tools, will influence the resulting form. Drawing and collage will provide the platform for two forms to evolve – one representational (animal, botanical or figurative) and one abstract.
Students will work with Carolyn to complete each sculpture using a variety of tools and materials (wire, plaster bandage, air hardening clay, thread, timber, dowel, cane etc).

Congratulations to the following outstanding young musicians who have been successful in gaining a place in the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University Australian Honours Ensemble Program (AHEP) this year:
Alexandria (Viola)
Jefferson (Trombone)
Charlotte (Double Bass)
Congratulations also to Catriona W (Cello) who has been selected to participate in the State Honours Ensemble Program QLD.
The Australian Honours and State Honours Ensemble Program give students the opportunity to work in an intensive environment of musical excellence with a team of eminent internationally recognised Conductors from Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University.
We are so proud of these students who will represent our Schools (in full uniform) in a Grand Finale Concert on the Saturday of the Program. The AHEP program runs in the September holidays from Wednesday 25 - Saturday 28 September and SHEP QLD runs concurrently from Thursday 26 - Sunday 29 September.
Catriona W in Year 11 was selected late last year to participate in the Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s Compose Program in 2024 and last Saturday night saw the culmination of her work when Coming Home – her original composition was performed by the QSO.
Queensland Symphony Orchestra's Compose Program is designed to introduce secondary school students to composing for orchestral instruments, extending learning in the senior phase of their schooling beyond the general requirements of the curriculum. Through workshops and face-to-face activities under the guidance of QSO Composition Mentors Craig Allister Young and Timothy Tate, participating students had the opportunity to write compositions for the QSO Connect Ensemble, resulting in a final presentation at the QSO Studio in South Bank, Brisbane on Saturday 15 June.
Catriona was tasked with creating an original composition using the central theme of “home” as inspiration. This concept of “home” was encouraged to be a deeply personal one that did not necessarily just refer to the building we live – it may be feeling at home around particular people, when reflecting on a memory/feeling or in a favourite geographic location. The compositions of the 25 students involved from around the state were varied and beautifully unique in their evocation of the concept.
We are proud of our composer of tomorrow! Congratulations Catriona on this fantastic achievement.
On Wednesday night, two of our wonderful music ensembles competed in the Metro North Regional Final of Fanfare. It was a privilege to sit in the audience and witness the depth of talent – both in our school and the other 6 schools selected for this stage.
Paganini Strings took the stage first and performed an exquisite program which included Shostakovich, Fauré’s Dolly Suite and Perseus by Soon Hee Newbold. The light and shade created by all 25 musicians working together was breathtaking – they blended beautifully and played as one voice. Congratulations to Ms Ruth Donovan and her students on their incredible work on this program.
Asymmetry closed out the evening with another exciting performance of the opening to Passage to an Unchartered World by Austin Keck, Chasing Shadows by Ivan Trevino and the dynamic Cyclone by Casella. Mr Jarrott and his 15 percussionists took the stage by storm and earned themselves one of three Most Outstanding Ensembles awards. Congratulations Asymmetry on your success!
Thank you also to our supportive IM families, many of whom were in the audience for these performances. We had a very vocal crowd encouraging our musicians all the way. And finally, a huge thank you to the Year 11 students who returned from their camp experiences to perform with their ensembles – we appreciate you, and your chauffeurs (families), going the extra mile to perform at this prestigious event.
The Minister for Education will announce who the five ensembles who will go on to perform in the State Gala in August at the beginning of Term 3.
