Wellbeing and Inclusion Update

Supporting Students Through Positive Transitions

Research consistently shows that when students experience an effective and well supported transition, their overall wellbeing improves and levels of anxiety decrease. Feeling prepared, informed and confident helps students settle more quickly into new routines, build positive relationships and approach new challenges with greater resilience.

On Wednesday 26th November, a group of selected Year 6 students attended the Secondary School Transitions Forum, an event designed to support Grade 6 students across the City of Greater Dandenong as they move into Year 7. The forum focused on building confidence, addressing common concerns, and helping students form friendships with peers who will be attending the same secondary school. Students had the valuable opportunity to hear directly from current secondary students, who shared honest insights about their own transition experiences and offered helpful advice to our Year 6 cohort.

Throughout the day, students participated in five interactive workshops, each designed to build essential skills for a smooth transition. These included activities centred on teamwork, navigating friendships, health and wellbeing, and goal setting. One of the highlights was the 'A Day in the Life of a High School Student' workshop, where secondary school mentors guided students through what to expect next year. Thanks to Mrs Bishop for supporting our students on this day.

Transition Day – Monday 9th December

Our next major transition event is the statewide Transition Day on Monday 9th December. On this day, all students will spend time in their 2026 learning spaces. For our Foundation–Year 5 students, this is a wonderful opportunity to meet new classmates, connect with teachers, and experience their new environment in a calm and supportive way. This day helps reduce uncertainty and builds excitement as students look ahead to the year ahead.

Working Together to Support Successful Transitions

Supporting students through transitions is a shared responsibility across our school. Teachers are provided with opportunities to meet and discuss how individual students can be best supported as they move into their new learning spaces. These conversations may include recommended adjustments to help students access their learning, whether environmental, behavioural/social or instructional.

Some students who work with our Allied Health Team have also been focusing specifically on transition skills. This support may involve small-group visits to their new learning areas, targeted practice of new routines, or the use of social stories to build familiarity and confidence.

We know that when families, teachers, support staff and students work together, transitions become a positive and empowering experience. By preparing students, listening to their concerns and celebrating their strengths, we help them step into new learning spaces with confidence. Supporting smooth transitions is an essential part of our commitment to nurturing the wellbeing and success of every child.
