This has been a busy term for Humanities and Commerce students as they consolidate their hard work across the year and continue on their path towards becoming critically and ethically engaged global citizens.

Our middle years history students have been exploring diverse perspectives, unfamiliar worlds, and profound social changes. Year 7 students have taken deep dives into Ancient China, Egypt and Australia, while Year 8 students have grappled with the wide-ranging consequences of the Black Death, and Year 9 students have been reckoning with the nature of history itself as they investigate the omissions, exaggerations, and mythologisations that accompany the commemoration of the First World War. Our economics and business students have been developing business plans to take their innovations to market, and exploring Australia’s interdependent trading relationship with other economies; our legal studies students have been exploring the way that political parties, interest groups, and the media influence government decisions; and our geography students have been unpacking the thorny problem of food security in the context of a rapidly changing world.

For senior Humanities and Commerce students, Term 4 is a period of transition and growth. Across Year 10, students in Legal Studies, Economics, Ancient History and Modern History have been commencing foundational studies for their senior courses. Our intrepid Year 10 Ancient History students even had the opportunity to cement their understanding of the practice of archaeology by getting their hands dirty with a dig hosted by the Abbey Museum. Our Year 11 students are about to complete the first of their Internal Assessments, a terrific achievement that represents the consolidation of years of study and a step towards post-secondary school careers. Our Year 12 students, meanwhile, completed their final exams last week and have since been spotted floating around campus as unburdened as butterflies. Senior teachers across the College have been immensely impressed with the perseverance of this cohort, who began their high school careers amid a pandemic and yet worked with diligence and care right up until the last moment.
