Day for Daniel

Today, we joined schools across Australia in taking part in Day for Daniel. This important day helps children learn how to keep themselves safe, how to look out for one another, and how to speak up if something doesn’t feel right.

Day for Daniel was created to honour a young boy named Daniel Morcombe. His family established the Daniel Morcombe Foundation to ensure all children learn essential skills to stay safe in the community and online. Today’s activities focused on helping our students be brave, strong, and prepared.

Throughout the day, our Sacred Heart messaging reinforced that child safety matters. Through workshops, activities, and mindful movement, students explored what it means to feel safe at home, at school, online, and in the wider community.

We discussed that:

  • You have the right to feel safe.
  • You have the right to say “No” when something doesn’t feel right.
  • You have trusted adults who can help you.

Students also learned the Daniel Morcombe Foundation’s three key safety messages:

  1. Recognise – Notice your body clues. Are you in a safe or unsafe situation?
  2. React – If you feel unsafe, use the No, Go, Tell strategy: say no, go somewhere safe, and tell someone you trust.
  3. Report – Speak to a trusted adult.

During our afternoon rotations, I led a workshop for all students on the importance of being an upstander. Sometimes we see things that don’t feel right. Unkind behaviour, someone being left out, or a situation that makes us uncomfortable. In these moments, we always have a choice:

  • Do nothing (be a bystander), or
  • Do something safe to help (be an upstander).

A heartfelt thank you to our Year 6 Wellbeing Leadership Team, our teachers, LSOs, students, and our wonderful Sacred Heart community for your enthusiastic participation and support today.
