Principal's Report
Jamie Sharp
The Principal’s Report for the December newsletter is something I genuinely enjoy writing each year. It offers a moment to reflect on our achievements while looking ahead to what comes next for our students, staff, and community. This time of year brings a mix of excitement and emotion for many families, so I encourage everyone to ensure their children can find moments of rest as they balance the many activities that come with the season.
This year, our school has been deeply engaged in reflection as we worked to shape our focus areas for the future.
Our Strategic Review provided a wonderful opportunity for the entire school community to celebrate the achievements of the past four years. With the involvement of students, parents, and staff, we have created a strong and future-focused plan that will guide learning and wellbeing at Somerville Primary School for the next four years.
Building on this work, we introduced our new logo, motto, mission statement, and renewed values. These were shared with all students, parents, and carers last week. Everything we do is anchored in this shared philosophy and approach, and I trust the communication provided offers clarity around our future direction.
Our 140th Year Celebration was another highlight of 2025. Students were highly engaged in exploring our school’s history and made meaningful connections to the significance of Somerville Primary School within our community. Through visits from special guests and our multi-age learning day, there was a clear sense of pride as we honoured this auspicious milestone.
I also extend my sincere thanks to our School Council. This dedicated group of staff and volunteer parents has continued to keep our school in a strong financial position while expanding programs through targeted and thoughtful direction. A significant focus this year was the review of our Out of School Hours Care service. After many hours of discussion and analysis, we look forward to welcoming OSHClub as our new provider in 2026.
Finally, thank you to the staff and the many parents who actively engage with the opportunities our school provides. I often speak about the “Triangle”—the relationship between parents/carers, the school, and the student. When those three points work together with trust and shared purpose, students thrive. This year, I have seen countless examples of our students truly Shining because of this strong partnership.

A reminder that the last day of school for 2025 is Friday 19th December, with school finishing at 1:00pm. Families needing supervision after this time must ensure they are enrolled with Camp Australia. The school office will close at 1:15pm. School returns in 2026 on Wednesday 28th January for Years 1–6. Our Prep students will begin on Thursday 29th January.
Thank you for your understanding regarding the postponement of our Christmas Concert. With the predicted weather, the original date would have been heavily impacted. We are hopeful for much better conditions on our rescheduled date: Monday 8th December, 4:30pm–6:30pm. Fingers crossed!
You will notice over the month of December some trades attending onsite as we prepare for the installation of new signage. There may be some areas that are cordoned off around the school, please stay clear of these areas.
Our 2026 Prep students have now completed three successful transition sessions. They met teachers, explored our facilities, and experienced life at Somerville Primary School. The most popular highlights—according to the Preps themselves—were being at “big school” and the playground! It has been wonderful to see how positive and enthusiastic our new students are.
Our Year 6 students have also participated in many transition activities across local secondary colleges. Our staff have worked closely with these schools to share information that will support each student’s successful transition into Year 7.
On Tuesday 9th December, we will hold our whole-school Transition Day. Students will find out their class and teacher for 2026. Staff have invested many hours of careful consideration to ensure every child continues to Strive, Grow and Shine next year. Leadership, specialist staff, and classroom teachers have worked collaboratively to form class groups that best support student learning and wellbeing.
Bec Whittingham was given a surprise farewell party by her students this week as she goes on maternity leave. We wish Bec and her family all the best with the new arrival.
Please note that the new social media ban for under 16s begins on 10th December. This change will guide how we continue to support students in using technology safely and appropriately within the school environment. Please read more information via this link.
Thank you to every member of our community for your support, enthusiasm, and commitment throughout the year. Somerville Primary School continues to be a place of pride, connection, and growth because of the people within it. I wish all families a safe, restful, and joyful holiday season.
