Scienceworks

By Tom and Riley 5A

On Monday the 10th of November, the Grade 5/6s had an excursion to Science Works. We took a train there at the start of the day and took a bus back.

Here are couple of highlights:

1. Lesson on the Sun, the Moon and the Earth

This term the ⅚’s Big Question is ‘How does Earth's movement in space affect life on earth?’’. There are many ways Earth's position in space affects us on Earth such as the tides, day and night, how long our year is and the season. Earth's position in the milky way is called the Goldilocks position because it is not too hot or cold.

In this session, we learned:

  • How the Earth moves around the Sun, how long a year is exactly (365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds by the way).
  • The moon moves around the Earth in 27 days and it also spins so that in 27 days it does a full rotation that's why you never see the other side of the moon.
  • The Sun is approximately 4.6 billion years old and it would take 1.3 million Earths to fill it up.
  • The Earth has an axis of 23.5 degrees.
  • The moon doesn’t produce its own light but reflects the sun's light.

2. The sports section

There was a 10m race track with a screen to the right showing a picture of Cathy Freeman. You press the start button and it counts you down 3… 2… 1…and then you start sprinting as fast as you can. The screens on your right show Cathy Freeman doing the race with you. At the finish line there is a timer showing how fast you ran.

There were also loads of interactive games showing how fast you can throw, how high you can jump and how long you can stay on a snowboard. My favourite one was the reactions test when a green light would flash and you had to press a button down then it told you how fast you reacted.

This day was really fun and everyone enjoyed it. Just a shoutout to the 5/6 teachers for making this day possible!
