Following are some snapshots that showcase the engaging learning experiences happening in the HSIE faculty. These experiences are helping our students develop the knowledge and skills to understand and positively contribute to the world around them. We look forward to their continuing journey of discovery!

In our Stage 4 Geography program, students are looking at ways to provide habitat for the endangered Black Cockatoo. Some Year 9 Geography students are conducting tests to assess soil pH levels and moisture content, in order to determine the most suitable spot for future tree planting to attract black cockatoos.

Stage 6 Business Studies students attended an economics forum at the Conservatory Function Room in Moss Vale. The event allowed students to hear the Chief Economist of Bendigo Bank discuss both macro-economics and future economic directions for the Southern Highlands. They also were able to discuss ideas raised in the forum with local business owners.

To complement their study of the Core unit for the HSC (Pompeii and Herculaneum), Year 12 Ancient History students were able to visit the exhibition, Pompeii, at the Australian National Museum in Canberra. Above: students view a recreation of the eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79AD (left) and examine wall paintings from Pompeian houses (right).

Year 11 Ancient History students visited the Chau Chak Wing at the University of Sydney to further understand the role of archaeology and history, and how these disciplines work together. Above (left): Students had a hands-on session working with artefacts up to 3000 years old; (right) students engaged with a Lego model of Pompeii to understand interpretations of the past.

On the HSC showcase evening, Year 12 Society and Culture students presented their Personal Interest Projects, a major component of this subjects HSC course. In a discussion forum they were interviewed and answered questions about the nature of their research and their findings.
