Remembrance Day - 'Lest We Forget'

Next Monday is Remembrance Day, which can also be known as Armistice Day. This day is a very significant date to many nations around the world, including Australia.

Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the end of the First World War on the 11th November, 1918.

In 1918, after suffering a number of defeats and heavy losses, the German forces agreed to an armistice (a truce) and this was the end of WWI. The treaty (agreement)  was signed at 5am on 11 November 1918, but did not officially come into effect until six hours later at 11am. This was when the war was officially declared over! This announcement was celebrated around the world; people yelled, cheered and danced in the streets.

Every year, nations around the globe fall silent for one minute at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month to remember those who have served their country during war.

On Remembrance Day, flags are flown at half-mast (half way down the flagpole) from 10.30am to 11.03am as a sign of mourning and respect.

Let us pray…

Loving God, today we honour the memory and lives of our sisters and brothers who have died in the wars of our nation. We thank the women and men who have served, and are serving in the military services of our country. We remember, too, all women and men who are peacemakers in our own lives and in the lives of others. We pray today for peace in our hearts and minds.
                                                                                          Amen.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them."
