In Year 8 Science, we have been learning about how science and technology contribute to finding solutions to a range of contemporary issues including the manufacture of new materials, including plastics.
Students had an opportunity to recreate casein plastic, which Queen Mary of England used as jewellery, as well as buttons, fountain pens and many other things.
Casein is still used nowadays to produce water-soluble glues and flexible food packaging, and it is also looked at as a possible way to boost the nutritional value of foods. Some think that it is the green plastic we need!
