Year 2 News
It has been a busy and exciting start to term 4 for our Year 2 students! We are midway through our current unit of inquiry on “How the world works” and students have been actively engaged in hands-on learning experiences, both in and out of the classroom.
Terrific Toys Incursion - Learning About Forces
In week one of term 4, students had a blast during the Terrific Toys incursion, where they explored the fascinating world of forces!
2A
The incursion was a fun and interactive way for students to learn how forces like push and pull work to make toys move. Through demonstrations and hands-on activities, students discovered how these forces help everyday object’s function. They had the opportunity to experiment with various toys to understand concepts such as friction, gravity and rotation.

The incursion complimented the learning students have been participating in the classroom and the addition of a take home toy was enjoyed by all.

Exploring Gravity and Electrostatic Force
Students have been learning about the various forces seen in everyday life including buoyancy, magnetic force, friction, gravity, air resistance and electrostatic force. This unit has seen students participate in lots of experiments in the classroom. Students were able to learn about the effects of gravity and air resistance using paper helicopters and were able to see electrostatic forces in action using balloons in different activities.
Students made paper helicopters with different sized wings and enjoyed watching the effects of gravity in action. They dropped their helicopters from height and predicted how fast they would fall, learning that helicopters with longer wings took longer to reach the ground.
Students also explored electrostatic force by rubbing balloons on their heads to make their hair stand up, used balloons to make objects move without touching them and used balloons to pick confetti up off the ground without direct contact.
Please enjoy photos of the children enjoying these activities!
Collaborating with Beaumaris Secondary College
While the year 5 students were on camp last week our Year 2 students had a unique opportunity to work with 30 Beaumaris Secondary College students to create PowerPoint presentations on persuasive texts.
Students were able to work in the year 5 learning space and use their laptops to build on their computer skills learnt last term. Together, they created PowerPoint presentations that showcased the key features of persuasive writing, such as using strong arguments,
emotive language and supporting evidence.
The collaboration allowed for shared learning and enabled our year 2 students to gain valuable insights into how to structure persuasive writing. The secondary school students were fantastic mentors, guiding and supporting the Year 2s throughout the project, and the results were impressive.
The Beaumaris Secondary Students attend BNPS each Wednesday for an hour as part of their Community Connections program, where they give back to their community. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were very proud of their work.
Year 2 Swimming Program
The Year 2 swimming program took place at the end of term 3. Students developed important water safety skills and built confidence in swimming. It was great to see their enthusiasm as they improved their swimming techniques, all while having a lot of fun.
The program not only promotes physical activity but also teaches essential life skills, helping our students stay safe around water.
