A Holistic Approach to Education

The IB Primary Years Programme focuses on developing the whole child, fostering international mindedness. At BNPS, we empower our students to be inquirers, knowledgeable, and caring individuals who are encouraged to ask challenging questions, reflect critically, and take responsible action.

IB Mission statement: Shaping future leaders

The International Baccalaureate® aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

Our Vision and Values: Building tomorrow’s adults

To inspire students to be lifelong learners and take risks with their learning, pursue their interests and flourish under our guidance.

The learning community is founded on an educational philosophy centred on the child, and grounded in the belief that all students can learn and all students have the right to become effective learners. It is important to continue to strengthen the partnership between staff, the students and their parents if this vision is to be achieved.

Our school community is committed to the belief – today’s children, tomorrow’s adults. We will endeavour to develop the teaching practices and learning that supports this belief. We will use a model of professional learning that supports and develops these effective practices and has at its core, the essential elements for learning; constructivism, inquiry, collaboration, self-responsibility and personal development in an environment of challenge and support. These practices underpin everything and enable us to build a community of global learners.

The professional learning of the teachers will be both focused and tied to our agreed direction of improving learning and teaching, and as a result, improving student outcomes.

Our core Values that unite us

VALUES COMMUNITY ESSENTIAL AGREEMENT

We will CARE for others, showing EMPATHY, compassion and RESPECT towards the needs and feelings of others. We will show RESPONSIBILITY to our own learning and belongings, showing self-discipline and commitment. We will show TRUST acting with integrity, honesty and a strong sense of fairness.

 Voices from Our Students

An interview with Year 6 students

How has being part of a PYP school shaped your learning experiences?

Tyler -Some of the experiences are that I learn so many different things. One of my favourite experiences was the exhibition because in my exhibition group we got to hand out straws for people to keep. We were focusing on pollution, and we wanted people to think about not throwing plastic in the ocean. I felt it was a really good and important action for people to think about.

Elli- I think I really like our units of inquiry because we normally do a lot of collaborating in groups, and it is fun. You are not relying on doing all the work you do by yourself, you are working together and sharing ideas to improve things.

Riley – I think a PYP school has a lot of different activities where we get to collaborate a lot. This is important because we get to hear everyone's ideas and their views on the topics and be open-minded.

Which Learner Profile Attributes do you think have had the biggest impact on you, and why?

Tyler- I think the Learner profile attribute of being a risk tasker. Being a risk taker is important because you may have to talk at assembly, and you may be nervous but then you have a chance to, and it is not that bad, and you are happy you did it in the end.

Elli- I think the Learner profile attribute of being a communicator – because if someone has an idea they share, and it is important in a group that you are a good communicator and share and listen to ideas. Being a good communicator helps you in lots of different ways that you learn and share ideas.

Riley- I think the Learner profile attribute of being a risk taker, because over all the years at Beaumaris North we have done more and more oral presentations and in our exhibitions and showcase I have been a risktaker.  Before these opportunities I never used to like doing them and now I don’t mind at all, I have built up my confidence.

As you prepare to transition to Year 7, which Learner Profile attributes do you feel will help you the most in your next stage of education?

Elli- Probably being caring because if you are caring it will be easier to make new friends, and I hope to make lots of new friends as well.

Tyler- I agree with Elli, being caring is an important attribute. Caring for other new people you will meet, trying to be caring as you make new friends and get to learn more about them.

Riley – Maybe being open minded is an important Learner attribute getting ready for secondary.   If I find anything too hard, I knowthat I can keep on going or ask for help. Being open-minded about this knowing I can solve anything, instead of just thinking, “I can't this.”

What advice would you give to new students joining our PYP community? What should they look forward to?

Tyler – They should look forward to a lot of fun things to do and learn about. They will have a lot of opportunities to learn different things like in subjects like Science as well.

Elli – If they were joining Year 6, I would tell them they would look forward to our units of

inquiry and of course our graduation. I would tell them all the students here are really nice and caring and it would be easy for them to find a friend.

Riley – The advice I would give to new students starting at our PYP school, is that even if at first you feel uncomfortable when you are working in a group or meeting someone new. They might end up being a nice person to work with and you may learn a lot from what they have to say. They should look forward to all the fun and exciting group work you get to do all through the year and also all the different units of inquiry.

How do you think the PYP has prepared you for the challenges and changes of secondary school?

Elli - I think going to a PYP school is probably better because you understand the best ways to learn for you. Self-management skills are a really important skill to learn, like using One Note to communicate and manage your work by yourself and in a group will really help. In secondary school we have to make our own way and organsie our work and I feel I have already got these skills.

Tyler –I feel like school has prepared me a lot. Secondary school is going to be a big step, but it is going to be a little bit like here. I was a risk taker to apply to go to the Sports Academy and have an interview. So, I have learnt to be a risk taker and use my communication skills to be able to go for the interview.

Rilley - I think again because we will be working in all different groups and with all different people this will prepare me. I already have experienced this in primary school, and I think I will find working and collaborating with different people easier in secondary school.

Can you describe a memorable project or activity that made you feel proud to be part of Beaumaris North Primary?

Tyler- In Year 5 we had to learn about natural disasters, and we had to make our own by ourselves and I did the volcano. It was really fun, and I learnt a lot.

Elli –Even though we haven't completed it, I am really proud of the Mega Market. Also, in ‘How the world works’ we focused on deforestation. As part of our action, we handed out seeds. I really hope the people who got the seeds will plant the seeds and hopefully grow native plants.

Riley – I agree with Elli, in the Year 6 Exhibition my group shared information about everybody feeling that they need to be perfect and how then if you feel bad about yourself it can be really bad for your mental health. I felt that we really informed people that everyone can feel like that. By informing people hopefully this helped people not feel as bad or alone. This will hopefully help raise awareness and have an impact for people.
