PARENTAL BURNOUT

What is it?  How do I know if I have it?  Can I fix it?  Do we all feel it at some point?

Circling around the psychology world is a term that you may have heard; parental burnout. It probably isn't a new phenomena but we are now starting to hear, have more open discussions and learn more about what is actually is.  The University of Queensland defines this state as "the reality of juggling the demands of caring responsibilities on their (parents) time, energy and resources leaves them (parents) with little time to take care of their own wellbeing".

As the world moves quicker, people get busier, schedules become more crowded and the 'village' disappears the likelihood of feeling like this at one point or another may happen to us all as a parent.  The overwhelm of feeling that we are prioritising ourselves can feel selfish but as they say "you cannot pour from an empty cup".

What can you do to combat parental burnout?

Self-Care: Prioritise your own needs. Take time for activities you enjoy, even if it’s just a few minutes each day.

Set Realistic Expectations: Understand that perfection is unattainable. Focus on doing your best, not being the best.

Share Responsibilities: If possible, share parenting duties with your partner or enlist help from family or friends.

Establish Boundaries: Learn to say no to additional commitments that could overwhelm you.

Connect with Other Parents: Talking to others in similar situations can provide support and perspective.

Mindfulness and Relaxation: Practices like meditation or deep breathing can help reduce stress.

Seek Professional Help: If feelings of burnout persist, consider talking to a therapist or life coach.

Routine and Structure: Having a predictable schedule can reduce chaos and help everyone feel more secure.

Focus on the Positive: Take time to appreciate the small joys of parenting. Celebrate little victories.

Be kind to yourself.

Be kind to others.

You are doing your best.

COMING UP

World Kindness Day is on

Wednesday November 13th.

World Kindness Day 2024 is a special day. It’s the day when we’re reminded how important it is to think of others and spread kindness whenever and however we can.

It can be really simple, small gestures. Sometimes the smallest of actions have the biggest impact. That’s what World Kindness Day is all about. We call it positive power.
