Grade 5 - 6
Exploring “The Island” in Reading
In our Reading sessions, students have been exploring Armin Greder's picture book, The Island. They have been examining the impact of the author’s narrative style and the illustrator’s techniques on the reader's understanding. Through engaging discussions and comprehension questions, students have been discovering themes of community and connection, as well as critically reflecting on how imagery enhances emotional responses when reading.
Writing Procedure Texts
In Writing, we have been focusing on procedural texts. Students are learning the structure, purpose, and language features that make these texts effective. They are creating their own procedures, ensuring clarity through the use of specific instructions and sequential steps. They look forward to trying out their peers' procedures as a way to evaluate and improve their own writing.
Algebraic Thinking in Maths
In Mathematics, we have been exploring algebra. Engaging in hands-on activities and collaborative problem-solving has allowed them to develop their algebraic reasoning skills. Students have been creating, continuing and describing number patterns to enhance their understanding of relationships between numbers. They have also been learning to understand and explain inverse operations, find unknown values in equations and apply their knowledge to solve more complex equations.
