Grade 1
Reading
In Literacy, we have spent time revising a number of sounds including ‘ow’, ‘ou’, ‘aw’, ‘au’, ‘_y’ and ‘ey’. Each day, students completed a follow up activity based on the explicit teaching for the session, as well as consolidating their prior knowledge by participating in a range of activities such as banana bingo, word sorting and more. Students particularly enjoyed using ipads to read texts in the MultiLit library.
Writing
In the past fortnight, students have been revising tricky words that have been previously learned. At the beginning of each week, students complete an extension activity related to the words. In addition, the Grade 1’s have also revisited numerous digraphs and trigraphs in consolidation.
Maths
In Maths this fortnight, students in Year 1 have been learning to collect and collate data while working with their peers. Students had experience formulating their own questions and collecting data using a tally. They then learnt how to represent their data in different ways eg using a bar graph or pictograph.
The students have been continuing to participate in number talks on Friday with the new focus being on exploring how to make a target number using given numbers. It has been great seeing the different strategies students have been using to create the set number using addition and subtraction.
Integrated
This fortnight in Integrated Studies, students in year 1 have been focusing on comparing green friends and red friends. We aim to be green friends because they are kind, caring and thoughtful. They make us feel good when we are around them. Red friends are the opposite, they make us feel bad, encourage us to make silly choices and distract us from our learning. Students have also been working on natural, constructed and managed features in our surrounding environment.
