PERFORMING ARTS
All students have begun focusing on a dance unit as part of their Performing Arts specialist. On top of beginning a new curriculum unit, students have also started preparing for the 2024 Christmas Concert and learning their dance routines to perform. All students were introduced to dance through the learning of safe dance practices. Students were encouraged to demonstrate their own body zone/personal space and ensure their body base/shoe laces are tied.
Foundation students were introduced to creating their own movement ideas while moving like different animals and/or characters. They have begun learning about a variety of dance aspects through the use of dance games and activities.
Students in Grade 1 and 2 have also explored two major types of movement we use in dance, locomotor and non-locomotor. Students linked their learning to the word ‘motor’, recognising that cars require a motor to move. If a car has ‘no motor’, it cannot move. Students were challenged throughout a movement activity to listen to each instruction and move around (locomotor) or move on the spot (non-locomotor).
Grade 3-6 students were introduced to the four elements of dance; space, timing, music and energy. Students discussed what each element was and discussed how they can use each element throughout our dance sessions.
