Mathematics
CURRICULUM FOCUS
We are learning to use subtraction strategies.
I can make the whole and take away the part. (10 - 5, make 10 with materials or draw, physically take away the part)
I can use count back strategy.
(8 - 3 = say 8, draw lines, circles or numbers to show how many you count back.)
I can use partition to count back easily.
for example, 8 and 6 is the same as 8 and 2 and 4
I can check my answer with a second strategy.
VOCABULARY
Subtraction: minus, takeaway, left over
Represent a problem: using drawings, physical and virtual materials, and number combinations within 10 to add and subtract collections to 20
Count back: 8 - 3 = 8 , 7, 6, 5
Partitioning: 7+5=7+3+2=10+2=12
ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING
To help students with their subtraction strategies, pose open ended questions such as:
Students can then solve this problem and check their answer with a second strategy.
