PODCAST DAY OUT: An Experiment in Student Voice

Podcast Day Out: An Experiment in Student Voice

Last Monday 14 October, a group of excellent students participated in the "Podcast Day Out" excursion, an inter-school event dedicated to fostering civil conversations about significant societal issues. The day provided a valuable opportunity for students to engage in respectful dialogue on topics that deeply resonate with young people today, such as:

  • "Like a disease, social media needs to be eradicated." Discuss.
  • In a free and democratic society, should there be any limits on free speech?
  • Can a society be fair or just if some people are much richer than others?
  • Is it realistic to think that people will adjust – or even sacrifice – their lifestyles to mitigate climate change?

The discussions were recorded at a professional recording studio, adding an extra layer of excitement and professionalism to the experience. Professor Laurance Splitter facilitated the sessions, guiding the conversations with thoughtful questions and encouraging critical thinking.

The event was not just about sharing opinions—it was also a chance to build connections with staff and students from the other school. The students embraced the opportunity to learn from each other and to explore diverse perspectives in a welcoming and open-minded environment. It was inspiring to see young people connect over meaningful discussions and to establish new relationships along the way.

The school community has every reason to be proud of our Year 9 and 10 students who participated and represented Frankston High with maturity and insight. Well done to:

  • Lene Michaelis (Year 10)
  • Autumn Murray (Year 9)
  • Eliza Patston (Year 10)
  • Tilly Scott (Year 9)
  • Matilda Smith (Year 9)
  • Lucy Stubbs (Year 10)
  • Mia Van Dorssen (Year 9)

This excursion served as a proof of concept for a youth-focused podcast format, aiming to create a platform where young voices can be heard on matters that shape their future. We look forward to more opportunities to engage in these meaningful discussions - who knows what the future holds!
