From the Classroom

News from The Seniors

In English, our senior students have continued reading Boy Overboard and other stories with similar themes. They’ve been comparing how different authors show what characters are feeling, and how those characters change throughout the story. It’s been great to see students thinking deeply and sharing their ideas during discussions.

In Maths, we’ve been exploring number patterns and how to describe and continue them. We’ve also been working on solving problems using the correct order of operations, especially when there’s more than one step. This week, we started looking at worded problems, where students need to turn a situation into a number sentence. This adds an extra challenge and gets them thinking carefully about what each part of the question is asking.

We’re now well into our Earth science unit and students have been learning about natural disasters and how they affect the Earth’s surface. This week, we focused on volcanoes and exploredout how eruptions can quickly change the land.

Last Friday, our senior students played their first round of interschool sport for the term. We were so impressed with their effort, teamwork, and great sportsmanship. A big thank you to the parents who volunteered their time to help—we couldn’t do it without you! We’re all looking forward to this Friday’s game against St Richard’s.

Let’s go Marlborough—Let’s go!

Middle School News

In Literacy, Middle A continues to read about Wandi, a dingo who has lost their family but becomes an inspiration for others. Students continue to investigate authority and authorship and how that relates to writing persuasive texts.

In Numeracy, Middle A students are reviewing perimeter and area as well as continuing lessons on division and multiplication. Please feel free to help your child by asking them times tables questions at the dinner table, in the car or on a walk to assist them with their learning.

In Science, we continue to study the Earth and how weather and some natural disasters can affect our world. In Inquiry we are beginning our research into Australia's neigbours and how our place in the world affects other people and countries.

As you know, last week we had our first 'Mums and Muffins' day. Students in the the Middle unit celebrated by writing about why their family is so special and drawing their family for a 'family of the year' award. It was lovely to see so many mothers and special friends visiting the classroom and having breakfast with their children in the library!

Juniors Tell All

Our Junior students have been thoroughly engaged in our Under the Sea inquiry unit this term. They've enjoyed learning about a variety of sea creatures and the different habitats they live in. From coral reefs, the sea floor and to the deep ocean, students have been exploring the features and adaptations that help these animals survive in their environments.

In English, Junior A has been learning to distinguish between information texts and texts that are written to entertain. As part of this learning, students created their own information books about sea turtles, showcasing their growing understanding of factual writing. The students really loved making these!

This week in Junior A and B, we have focused on sentence structure and boundary punctuation. In Junior B students have been learning about conjunctions and capital letters. Students in Junior A practiced using capital letters and full stops correctly and were excited to write their own sentences using our classroom prompts “Captain Capital” and “Full Stop Fred”.

In Math's, junior A students have been working on tallying and data collection, with plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning. Last week, they explored how to record and interpret data using tally marks. This week, the focus has shifted to addition, with students using materials, games and visual models to develop their number skills. Junior B have been loving learning about graphing they've been creating picture and bar graphs.

We also have loved spending time with our buddies every second Monday afternoon, this week we made monsters with them.

It’s been a productive and enjoyable few weeks, and we’re looking forward to seeing the students continue to build on their learning throughout the rest of the term.

Performing Arts

This fortnight, we have been exploring different ways to make music! It was been wonderful to see everyone be so engaged and give their personal best as we learned to create rhythm using body percussion and bucket drums! The Junior and Middle School loved using the drums this fortnight, learning to keep on time and work together to play “We Will Rock You”. Over the next fortnight, all grades will continue to learn music using

bucket drums, and be introduced to the ukulele.

Physical Education

During Education week the students in Physical Education classes focused on teamwork and cooperative activities. We had a lot of fun,  including the parents who joined in the activities. The students were so competitive , in a positive way,  when their parents participated .
