Year Four Additive Thinking - “Let’s go shopping!”

Connection to the Mathematics Curriculum 2.0: Uses mathematical modelling to solve practical problems that involve additive situations, including financial contexts, and choose efficient calculation strategies.

Within our additive thinking unit, students have been exposed to a range of strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems, including the bar model, algorithm, split and jump strategies.

To situate student learning within real-world contexts, we decided to go shopping (metaphorically)! Students perused Coles catalogues and ‘purchased’ items within a budget, as well as calculated how much change they would receive.

Warm up Game: Totality

Last week we played the warm up game totality. The game has been adapted from the website Nrich (nrich.maths.org).

Materials:

  • Game board (printed from the Nrich website, or displayed on a device).

  • One counter or coin.

How to Play:

  1. Choose a two digit number as the target number.

  2. Player 1 places their number on a starting digit on the game board and says the number aloud.

  3. Player 2 moves the counter along one line to an adjacent number, adds on that number, and says the ‘running total’ aloud.

  4. They payers continue to take turns and add to the running total.

  5. The first person to reach the target number is the winner.
