Literacy

Students in Year 3/4 have been engaging in a range of interesting Literacy tasks over the past few weeks. We have been looking at writing personal responses to images, short stories and articles being read during class time. We have had numerous discussions about what a personal response entails and have come to understand that we are focusing on feelings and personal thoughts. Prompts such as "I liked or loved this because..." "This reminds me of when I..." and "This makes me think of..." have guided us in this process. With this in mind, students have been able to reflect more carefully on their own experiences and establish connections to a variety of texts and media during our learning time.

 Mathematics

In Mathematics, we have been learning about data collection, correct use of graphs and data analysis of these graphs. Students have been engaged in surveying their peers through developing questions with limited categories or categorical responses. An example of this was when we asked students, “What is your favourite season?”. This provided clear insight into the kind of information that can be collected for data to be input into a column or bar graph.  3/4A have enjoyed this activity, using their daily survey, where each morning students arrive and read the question being surveyed and provided their answer. This information was then collected and used with the class later in the day to properly tally and input into an appropriate graph.

Inquiry

Our inquiry this term focuses on natural forces that impact our everyday lives. Forces such as those behind simple movement or activities we engage in every day. Some of the forces that we have explored are, but not limited to; Push, Pull, Gravity and Friction. Using these, we have challenged our students to create a marble run using recycled materials in our weekly STEM sessions.
