The Year 1/2 students have been focusing on digraph and trigraph sounds such as ‘oi’, ‘oy’, ‘are’, ‘air’, ‘eer’, and ‘ear’. They are learning to identify these sounds in words and are practising segmenting and blending as they read their levelled books. Furthermore, students have been exploring different types of informative texts, with an emphasis on understanding their structure and language features. In the coming weeks, they will learn how to draft their own information reports.
In Maths, the Year 1/2 students have been learning how to read and represent time on an analogue clock to the hour, half-hour, and quarter-hour. They’ve also been exploring the duration and sequence of time, learning about hours, days, weeks, months and years. We can enhance our learning by practicing telling the time throughout the day, including during meals and at bedtime.
During Inquiry, the Year 1/2 students have been researching different weather conditions and investigating how they can affect the Earth. They have been learning about natural disasters such as droughts, floods, and storms, and how these events can impact the animals, people and our environment. Through class discussions and group research, students are developing a deeper understanding of how weather shapes our world.
On the 18th of June, the Year 2 students took part in the Suburban Rail Loop incur. As part of the experience, they were invited to help name the new tunnel boring machine. They were presented with three name options, each honouring a woman who made a significant contribution to our community and were asked to vote for their favourite. At the end of the excursion, each student had the opportunity to operate the stationary excavator.
