Welcome to Term 2!
We are excited for a rich and engaging term of learning across all curriculum areas. This term, students will explore their local environment through Geography, build their skills in Writing and Reading, and develop important Numeracy understandings through real-world contexts.
🌏 Geography Focus
Our students will explore the following big questions:
- What makes a local place special?
- What is in our local community, both man-made and natural?
- Where are these features in relation to our school?
- What can we learn about our local community?
- What places are me and my family connected to?
✍️ Writing Focus
Students are developing skills in Informative Texts:
- Prep: Expanding simple sentences and beginning to write factual pieces.
- Year 1/2: Writing clear simple sentences and organising facts using headings, labels, and diagrams.
📚 Reading Focus
This term, we are strengthening essential reading skills through daily practice in:
- Phonemic Awareness – hearing and working with sounds in words
- Phonics – decoding and recognising sound-letter patterns
- Fluency – reading with expression and pace
- Vocabulary – understanding and using new words
- Comprehension – thinking about and discussing what we read
➕ Numeracy Focus
Prep – Unit of Work #1: “X Marks the Spot” Students will explore number and space through movement, play, and hands-on activities:
- Number: Counting, place value, ordering numbers
- Measurement: Length, distance, and time
- Space: Giving and following directions, simple mapping
Year 1/2 – Unit of Work #1: “Local Walk” Linked to our Geography unit, students will apply maths to explore and understand their community:
- Number: Counting, place value, ordering, and recognising Australian money
- Algebra: Identifying and continuing number patterns
- Measurement: Exploring length, distance, and time
- Space: Giving and following directions, using simple maps
- Statistics: Collecting, recording, and interpreting data from the local walk

- Year 1/2 – Local Community Walk: Observing natural and built features, learning how spaces are used, and connecting them to our school’s location.
