From the Principal's Desk

May 2025

A highlight of this term was our 2025 Northern Bay College ANZAC Ceremony, held at the Norlane RSL. Our partnership with the RSL continues to provide a deeply respectful and meaningful way for our students to engage with the legacy of ANZAC. We are truly grateful for their support and the strong community ties that make events like this possible.

This year, we were privileged to welcome local member Ella George to our ceremony. Ella spoke with warmth and sincerity, sharing reflections that helped bring the spirit of ANZAC to life for our students. Beyond the day itself, Ella has been a remarkable supporter of our college — from championing school infrastructure upgrades, to celebrating student achievement and participation, to her regular presence at key events across our campuses. Her ongoing engagement shows our students that their voices, education, and future matter deeply. Our students led the service beautifully — reciting the Ode (Ashton Stone), playing the Last Post and Rouse (well done Thomas de Francesco), and singing the National Anthems live (well done Jahnaye Buntine). These contributions brought a personal and powerful dimension to the ceremony, and we are proud of how they embraced their roles.

We thank the Norlane RSL, Ella George MP, and all staff and students involved in making the 2025 ANZAC Ceremony such a moving and memorable event. A recording of the service has been shared with our community for those who would like to reflect at home. Lest we forget.

GROWTH

Extended School Day

Our Extended School Day program kicked off Term 2 with nearly 400 students participating in a wide range of engaging activities—from hammer beads to soccer to yoga. A true highlight of our NBC Equity programs, the initiative continues to provide students with meaningful opportunities to connect, learn, and thrive beyond the regular school day. Hats off to all the dedicated staff who bring this program to life each term. If you haven’t already, come along and see the program in action—it’s well worth a visit!

Youth Leadership Training

A big congratulations to the 15 students who participated in the recent Confident COMMS and Advocacy training sessions as part of the Youth Development Council initiative through the holidays. These valuable workshops were held across two dates – the Confident COMMS Intro and Mentoring sessions on April 8 and 9, followed by the Advocacy and "Meet Your MP" training on April 16. This series of workshops is helping to build skills in public speaking, advocacy, and civic engagement. Students are now preparing their pitches for the final Advocacy and "Meet Your MP" event, which will take place on June 11 from 10:00am–12:00pm at the Art Gallery/Theatre.

We’d like to thank Nestor Estampa, our wonderful CatholicCare Family Worker, who was responsible for bringing this amazing opportunity to our students.

Stay tuned for more updates!

Student Leaders

Every two weeks our school leaders across the college come together at Goldsworthy, led by college captains Ali & Farzana. They have been guiding the junior leaders through their ideas of leadership and change throughout our college, brainstorming ways that our campus’ can come together to make a positive change in our community as well as exploring the kind of leaders that they want to become.

Last term our student leaders attended the Melbourne Secondary Youth Leadership Conference alongside 1800 other students from across Victoria. Australia's largest youth leadership conference saw our leaders actively involved throughout the day, interacting with the presenters and other students, exploring themes of how to become their own leaders. These students represented NBC with pride and our senior captains set a glowing example for all of the younger leaders from across our college.

Auto Room Upgrade

A shout out to the GITTC team who have worked round the clock to upgrade the teaching and learning spaces in our Auto facilities. The team have been able to create a new theory room that overlooks the workshop area and have worked to rearrange the flow of the workshop to one that better resembles a workflow in industry. These changes will ensure that our students continue to receive industry standard instruction in an environment fit for purpose. We look toward seeing the finished product in the coming weeks.

COLLABORATION

Student Volunteer 'Thank You' Afternoon Tea

We recently held a thank you afternoon tea to celebrate our amazing student volunteers who supported the Harmony Day Community Expo. These students gave up their weekend to welcome guests, set up marquees and displays, and ensure the event ran smoothly. Their commitment highlights just how important Harmony Day is to our student community and how deeply they value cultural inclusion and connection. Acts of service like this are something we are proud to see and celebrate across our college—our students consistently demonstrate generosity, leadership and a strong commitment to their community.

Goldsworthy Open Night

Goldsworthy Open Night was a truly vibrant and uplifting event, providing a brilliant platform to celebrate the incredible achievements of our senior school students in recent years. It was particularly special this year, as our college has been recognised as the most improved senior secondary program in the entire South Western Victoria region—a remarkable milestone that reflects the dedication of both our students and staff. Families and visitors were clearly captivated by the sense of pride and possibility emanating from the spaces around the campus that were so beautifully presented - making a powerful statement about the strength of our programs. Thanks to the hard work of the Goldsworthy team, and the enthusiastic promotion from our Prep - Year 8 Campus staff.

IMPACT Students attend Jesus Christ Superstar

On Thursday evening, a group of our IMPACT students attended Jesus Christ Superstar at the Princess Theatre—another wonderful addition to the rich cultural experiences the program continues to offer. Students were captivated by the energy and talent of the live performance, deepening their appreciation for the performing arts. A big thank you to the staff who accompanied them in what always is a late but worthwhile night! These opportunities are a vital part of inspiring creativity and broadening horizons for our students.

Student Led conferences

A huge thank you to all staff for your dedication to our recent Student-Led Conferences. The high level of parent participation, combined with strong SSG attendance, highlights the deep commitment of our school and families to working together in support of student growth. Across the college, it was fantastic to see such engaging conversations and meaningful reflections, providing valuable opportunities for students to take ownership of their learning. Your efforts in facilitating these important discussions are truly appreciated and make a lasting impact on our students' development.

IMPACT Music

After working with musicians, learning the skills in either drums, guitar or voice, the Year 10 IMPACT students went to Oxygen College to learn how a recording studio works and the steps a band goes through to record a song. The Year 10's loved the experience, with their biggest complaint being they wanted to stay in their longer!

Recognising ES Day 2025

It was heartening to see our Education Support (ES) staff celebrated in this video – LINK – recognising the vital role they play across our campuses each day. At Northern Bay College, the academic and personal success of our students is deeply supported by our dedicated ES team. Our team of ES is made of so many complex and important rolls – all designed to ensure our students have access to outstanding learning and development opportunities. To the NBC ES, your contributions are integral to our daily operations and the nurturing environment we strive to maintain. We extend our sincere thanks for your unwavering commitment to our students, teachers, and families.

PERSISTENCE

District Cross Country and Regional Athletics

Our students did a fantastic job representing the College at the District Cross Country on Tuesday, held at Geelong Grammar School. With seven schools and around 150 competitors involved, it was a great display of determination and school spirit. Our 13 participants gave it their all across the 2.5km and 3km courses, and we’re thrilled that five students finished in the top eight of their age groups—qualifying for the Division Cross Country.

Congratulations to Evie Hughes, Sam Blackney, Molly Wilton, Chelsea Jennings and Zainab Moalem on progressing to the next level! Likewise, this spirit was again on display at the Regional Schools Athletics carnival held at Landy Field on Thursday. With over 100 students competing for NBC from Year 7-12 the college was very well represented. Again, the college enjoyed best ever results at senior level finishing third overall. In both instances staff in attendance reported that NBC students did themselves proud in terms of their sportsmanship and team spirit.

Athletics Carnivals

Over the last two weeks of term one, our various athletics carnivals were held, ending with the Year 7-12 Athletics carnival. These days are always full of fun and excitement for students and staff alike and provide a great opportunity to spend quality time with our students.

The year 7-12 Aths carnival provides a fitting finale to the term long Year 7-8 SEED Athletics unit and students definitely have been able to demonstrate a huge growth in their skill in the various events.

Thanks so much to our Sports Coordinators and supporting team who do a wonderful job pulling these events together.

KINDNESS

Richard Marles Tour

On Tuesday NBC was fortunate to have a very special guest arrive for a tour of our Goldsworthy Campus. The Honourable Richard Marles MP, our Federal Member of Parliament and currently Acting Prime Minister, took some time from his busy schedule to tour our senior campus. Mr Marles’ visit, chaperoned by some our outstanding Goldsworthy Student leaders, enabled him to visit classes, engage in conversation with our students and tour some of the wonderful facilities we have at our school.

We say it so often at NBC – our students are our best asset – and today was another shining example, as our students shared in words and actions the positive environment that is Northern Bay College.

Mr Marles spoke so positively of the impact that the students had made on him and was just so appreciative of the opportunity to connect in what was truly a meaningful and wholesome visit. We are so grateful that Mr Marles could fit us into his diary and look forward to future visits.

Vale Rachel Bray

This week we learnt of the sad passing of former Goldsworthy Campus teacher Rachel Bray. Rachel was a distinguished classroom teacher at NBC and our founding schools for over 20 years and is remembered for her highly engaging classroom practices and her absolute care and compassion for the students she taught in subjects including from media to English.  We send our sincerest condolences to Rachel’s partner Albert, and her extended family at this difficult time.
