Around Ironside

A few of our favourite things in 3D
For 3D, this term has been full of discoveries, experiments, and exciting new experiences. We have learned so much and had the chance to explore lots of different activities.
In English, we have been learning to create persuasive texts with the goal of persuading our friends to try something new or exciting. We have each chosen an activity we are passionate about and are practising using our voices, sharing personal stories, and including emotive and evaluative language to engage our audience. As part of the process, we have focused on organising our ideas clearly and using persuasive techniques to make our arguments strong. Watch out, by the end of the term, we might be so good at persuading others that we could convince anyone to agree with anything!
In Maths, we have explored numbers up to 10,000, practiced counting money and calculating change, and learned to tell time like detectives. We have also created 3D shapes, naming faces, edges, and vertices, and proudly shared our models with the class.
In Science, we explored how heat affects solids and liquids and discovered how heat energy moves from one object to another. Working in groups, we designed scientific experiments that were fair and reliable. We learned what a fair test means and followed the COWS Moo Softly mnemonic to help plan our investigations. We measured temperature changes, tested our predictions, and observed how heat moves between objects. Sometimes our guesses were correct, and sometimes surprising, but every experiment helped us understand more about the world around us.
We were so excited to meet Mr David Heyden, who went to Ironside in the early 1980s! As part of our HASS learning, we prepared questions and interviewed him to find out how things had changed and what had stayed the same over time. We loved hearing his stories. Back then, there was only one computer shared among all the students, worksheets came from a mimeograph (which smelled really strong!), and the school had real grass on the oval, though David remembered most of the other grounds were bitumen instead of the beautiful, paved areas we have now. Hearing his stories helped us see how school life had changed and made us really appreciate the modern conveniences we enjoy today.
Every week this term has been full of new things to explore. We have been scientists, mathematicians, writers, and storytellers. Year 3 is full of exciting learning, and we are proud of everything we have achieved.
Young Hands Fold for Peace
Hi everyone,
With only a few weeks before the Japan Study Tour takes flight, we are embarking on the massive task of folding Senbazuru – one thousand origami cranes. These will be taken to Japan by our wonderful Year 5 and 6 students and offered as a mark of respect at the Peace Memorial in Hiroshima.
This is a beautiful and meaningful tradition that symbolises hope and a wish for peace. It’s inspired by the story of Sadako Sasaki, a young girl affected by the atomic bombing, whose legacy continues to inspire peace efforts around the world.
We’d love for as many students as possible to contribute to this special project. Even a single crane makes a difference!
The details
Who: Year 3-6 students
What: Origami Club
When: First break on Tuesdays (come along after you’ve eaten your lunch) from week 2
Where: Ms Aboud’s Japanese classroom
Thanks for your support,
Jessica Faithfull | 3C Classroom Teacher.
☀️ No Hat, No Play
We are noticing an increasing number of students arriving at PE lessons without a hat. Our spare hat supply is very limited.
Please ensure your child brings their own clearly named hat to school every day. Hats are an important part of our SunSmart policy and are required for outdoor activities, including PE.
Thank you for helping us keep our students safe in the sun.
