5/6 Learning News

Our Learning

Literacy

Tom Appleby Convict Boy

This term we’ve been diving deep into our class novel, which has sparked some powerful conversations. Linking back to our learning about the First Fleet and European history in Australia, we’ve been exploring these events through both European and convict perspectives. Our discussions have stretched into big themes of friendship, survival, and the  stark differences between life then and now.

Book Week was another highlight, and what a celebration it was!

We kicked things off by sharing stories with our buddies, before using our imaginations to map out adventurous worlds, both real and imagined. A special moment for our 5/6 learners was hearing from author and illustrator Jess McGeachin, who shared insights into his creative process. We wrapped up the week in true St Joseph's style showcasing our creativity at our Dress Up parade.

Numeracy

We’ve been exploring the fascinating world of angles, from acute and obtuse angles, to reflex and revolution angles. Learners have been developing confidence with protractors, investigating the properties of angles, and practising how to identify complementary and supplementary pairs.

Alongside this, we’ve been strengthening our mental maths skills by using efficient strategies such as building to the nearest ten or splitting numbers to add and subtract with accuracy.

It’s been wonderful to see learners combining careful measuring with flexible number thinking.

Community Project

We have been busy preparing for our upcoming production, The Cow Moo-sical, and our learners have truly impressed us with their bravery, patience, and determination throughout rehearsals. Their excitement was sparked after our excursion to the Princess Theatre to see Annie the Musical. For many, it was their very first live theatre experience, a privilege to share together.

The wide eyes and open mouths said it all, our learners were completely captivated. That inspiration has flowed straight into our own rehearsals, and it’s been a joy to watch their confidence and creativity shine.

Our Community

Some of our learners with parents playing for the Lakers have been busy creating posters and pom poms to cheer them on for the upcoming finals. Good luck to the C Reserve netballers!

Meanwhile, others have been putting their creative energy into making props for The Cow Moo-sical. Here’s a little sneak peek at what’s been taking shape behind the scenes!
