1/2 Learning News

Literacy
We have been focussing on the ‘bossy e’ spit digraph, learning about how the ‘e’ changes the vowel from a short to long sound such as hop – hope. We have been immersed in being detectives and finding these words in our readers and library books, written silly sentences with as many ‘bossy e’ words as possible and practiced using this rule in our spelling activities.
We have also been enjoying writing creative stories focussing on things we like and dislike, and using creative language to enhance our writing.
Numeracy
We have been looking a shapes and their properties this term. We were exposed to many new terms such as 2D, 3D, parallel, vertices (corners), quadrilaterals (for sided shapes), pentagons and hexagons, as well as the definition of regular and irregular polygons.
We have loved being hands on and making our own polygons with challenges such as using pop sticks to make shapes with 1, 2 or 3 pairs of parallel sides as well as creating irregular polygons with different length sides.
100 Day Takeover!
As the Foundation students have been at school for over 100 days, and with the 3-6 students off in the City, F-2 thought it was high time they rule the school! After some heavy consultation rounds, they wore casual clothes and walked into decorated doorways before beginning their special day. Starting with their usual Art lesson, they then played some sports games before recess.
After recess, we all walked down to MacKillop Walk where different groups built stick forts, did still life drawings of the birds in the trees, or hunted for evidence of monsters outside the drain pipe (we are reassured that there is definitely hard evidence for this being the case, because how else would a chip packet get in the drain?)
For lunch they were treated to hot chips, party pies and sausage rolls, before settling into a movie, party games in the Foundation room, or free play.
It was a lovely day all round filled with lots of laughter, joy, and celebration.
Book Week - Book an Adventure!
We had an amazing week, celebrating all things books and adventure for Book Week! Each lunch time, one of our senior students read one of the Children's Book Council short listed picture story books. These were followed by activities run by Ivy & Andy, our Year 5&6 Learning Leaders in our beautiful Sanctuary.
On Friday, we had so much fun at our parade, showing off our fantastic costumes which included princesses, superheroes, fairies, cowboys and even an astronaut! We invited families to join us in various activities which included a weaving task relating to the picture story book Afloat, creating bouquets from flowers and plants found in our garden and MacKillop Walk - as seen in Flora, making a courage badge, to represent times we have been brave relating to Don’t Worry Felix, and a handprint craft connected to The Land Recalls You. It was wonderful to see not only the children, but also their families getting into the magical spirit of books and reading.
