Parent Support

Keeping Kids Safe - a free course for parents about teen sex, consent and relationships
Keeping Kids Safe (KKS) is a free, four-session course for parents and caregivers of Year 7 -9 students (and welcome parents of other age groups as well) to build confidence in talking with their young people about relationships, consent, respect and sex in a way that aligns with their family values, culture and faith.
The program aims to help parents have confident conversations about consent, relationships, and sexuality. Designed to prevent sexual violence, it is backed by research and created by a team of experts in health, education and gender equality.
The course is designed to complement what young people are learning at school through Respectful Relationships programs. By working together - schools, parents, and communities - we can help make sure that young people get clear, consistent messages about respect, consent, and healthy relationships.
Topics include:
- What consent really means, including changes to the law and the importance of clear, enthusiastic agreement in relationships
- How to talk about consent and sex in a positive, healthy, and age-appropriate way
- How to respond if a young person shares that something has happened to them, using trauma-aware approaches
- How to have comfortable, ongoing conversations with your children about relationships, consent, and sex, including how to navigate tricky questions
- How to model respect, equality, and healthy relationship behaviours at home
- How to break down harmful stereotypes about gender and sexuality so that young people can grow up feeling safe, respected, and valued
The program takes place over four consecutive weeks at Northcote High School, starting November 19. Participants should attend all four sessions to get the most out of the experience.
