College Principal Message

A Closer Look at Copperfield College
At Copperfield College, we pride ourselves on being a vibrant, diverse, and inclusive multi-campus community. Our commitment to excellence in Teaching & Learning, a forward-thinking curriculum, and a wide array of extracurricular opportunities ensures every student is empowered to thrive.
One College – Three Sites – One Family
Our mantra reflects the unity and strength of our three specialised campuses, each offering outstanding facilities and tailored support to all our students:
- Kings Park Junior Campus – Years 7–10
- Sydenham Junior Campus – Years 7–10
- Delahey Senior Campus – Years 11–12
Across all campuses, our dedicated staff work tirelessly to create a safe, supportive, and high-achieving environment. Our students are resilient, driven, and encouraged to reach their full potential.
Our mission, "Empowering Every Student to Aspire and Achieve" is the foundation of everything we do.
As Principal, I am deeply passionate about public education. I find immense joy in connecting with students, learning about their lives, and building the relationships that foster a true sense of belonging. I believe in the power of student voice, each learner brings a unique perspective, and every student has the capacity to grow, succeed, and shine.
Student voice is not just important, it’s essential. When students are given the opportunity to express their ideas, concerns, and aspirations, they become active participants in their own education. Their perspectives help shape a school culture that is inclusive, responsive, and forward-thinking.
Student voice fosters:
- Ownership of learning – When students feel heard, they engage more deeply and take greater responsibility for their progress.
- Confidence and resilience – Speaking up builds self-esteem and empowers students to advocate for themselves and others.
- Innovation and improvement – Students often see things from a fresh angle, offering ideas that can enhance teaching practices, wellbeing initiatives, and school
Our Principal and leadership team are deeply committed to listening to our learners. Whether it’s through student forums, Student Representative Council, classroom discussions, or informal conversations in the yard, we actively seek out student input. We don’t just hear our students, we act on what they say.
I regularly engage with students across all campuses, taking time to understand their experiences, celebrate their achievements, and respond to their concerns. This open-door approach helps build trust and ensures that every student knows they matter.
We encourage students to:
- Share feedback on their learning experiences
- Contribute ideas for school improvement
- Participate in decision-making processes
- Lead initiatives that reflect their passions and values
Whether it’s a Year 7 student suggesting a new club, or a Year 12 student reflecting on exam preparation, every voice adds value. We know that when students feel seen and heard, they flourish, not just academically, but socially and emotionally.
At our College, student voice isn’t a buzzword, it’s a cornerstone of our culture. I am proud to be a school where learners help lead the way.
At Copperfield College, we celebrate every student, regardless of background, ethnicity, religion, or socioeconomic status. What matters most is their curiosity, courage, and capacity to learn.
Together with our educators, families, and broader community, we make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people. That is our greatest reward.
I warmly invite parents, guardians, and friends to engage with our College. Book a tour with our Campus Principals and experience firsthand the dynamic learning environment we offer. I look forward to welcoming many families through our doors.
Countdown to VCAA VCE Year 12 Exams
As the final VCAA VCE exams approach, I encourage our Year 12 students to use the upcoming two-week break wisely balancing rest and relaxation with focused revision. When Term 4 begins, time will fly, and every moment counts.
To our parents and guardians: we know this period can be emotionally intense. Supporting your child through these final weeks is no small task, and your encouragement is invaluable.
It’s surreal to reflect on how quickly the school years have passed. As we look ahead to the future, I extend my heartfelt best wishes to our Year 12 students for their exams and beyond. You’ve got this.
"Hang in there, there’s light at the end of the tunnel."
School Review
Our four-yearly school review has now concluded, and I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone involved in this important process.
Special thanks to the following individuals for their valuable contributions:
- Mandy El Ali – School Council President
- Tim Natoli – Challenge Partner, Principal at Mill Park SC
- Milan Matejin – Challenge Partner, Principal at Bayside College
- Davide Lombardi – Acting SEIL
- Campus Principals – Michael Gruis, Mary Chiodo, Lance Petherick
- Shane Wainwright – School Reviewer
I also wish to acknowledge the many students, teachers, and parents who participated in Focus Groups and Forums across the College. Your insights and feedback formed the foundation of our new School Strategic Plan (SSP), including our goals, key improvement strategies, and targets. This collaborative process has helped us reflect on where we are and chart a clear, united path forward.
Once finalised, the new SSP will be shared with the broader school community.
It Takes a Village to Raise a Child
The African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child,” reminds us that education is a shared journey. At Copperfield, we believe in the power of collaboration between families, educators, and the wider community.
Research consistently shows that parental involvement is a key driver of student success. When families are engaged:
- Students earn higher grades and test scores
- They attend school more regularly
- They develop stronger social skills and better behaviour
- They’re more likely to graduate and pursue further education
Schools play a vital role in fostering this connection. Through open communication, family nights, home visits, and inclusive events, we aim to build strong partnerships that support every learner.
During the challenges of remote and flexible learning, we saw firsthand how critical the role of parents and guardians is. At Copperfield College, we continue to honour that role, listening, collaborating, and empowering families to be active participants in their child’s educational journey.
