Sustainability @ TPPS

Have you noticed all of the glorious flowering wattle trees at the moment? We have a stunning wattle tree in our school, and the students have had a great time noticing all the little details about it.
- The flowers are like tiny yellow pom poms!
- The leaves on our wattle tree look like feathers.
- If you listen carefully, you can hear a humming noise coming from the tree. It’s all the honey bees collecting delicious nectar!
- Ants are marching up and down the trunk.
We found out that our tree is called acacia dealbata - the silver wattle. It comes into bloom during the Wurunderi season of Guling - Orchid season (Winter).
The Grade 1's and 2's have made a spectacular display outside the staffroom of the wattle tree. The Grade 2 students sat in the yarning circle and weaved beautiful blossoms, and the Grade 1's illustrated some silvereye birds.
Our Grade 1's also planted some flower seeds around the school. We can’t wait to see them grow! Some of the very strong students carried buckets of soil to the Prep playground to fill up the planter box.
Grade 3 students have been learning all about Australian birds over the last few weeks. Did you know that Australia is a Parrot Paradise? We have 56 species of parrots here. Black cockatoos, budgerigars, gang gang cockatoos, rainbow lorikeets - it’s hard to choose which one is our favourite! We are learning that we should never feed wild birds because it can make them sick. A great way to invite birds into our gardens is by making them a bird bath instead!
We had a wonderful time doing a bird survey in our playground.
Grade 4 students have been working really hard training up to run our compost system and care for the chicken coop.
The students have all been showing such care, enthusiasm and responsibility.
And the chickens think they are doing a great job!
