Kinder/Year 1

It is hard to believe, but after just four partial weeks at school, our kindergarten students are writing and reading words! They even know that names are very important and need a big capital letter.

They have been exposed to the names and phonemes (sounds) of over half the letters of the alphabet and the correct formation for them. Each day, they diligently review each one. Did you know that a child’s ability to quickly and automatically name letters and their sounds is a predictor of future reading success? Thank you for spending a few minutes each afternoon reviewing these with your child to help them gain the speed needed to be effective readers.

ENE-PHOKW-01: Phonic knowledge - Uses single-letter grapheme-phoneme correspondences and common digraphs to decode and encode words when reading and creating texts.

In the new Science and Technology K–6 curriculum, there is a heavy focus on students learning to apply their knowledge to develop critical and creative thinking to create designed and digital solutions. Creating written texts is a way of organising thoughts, explaining thinking, and making connections within and across learning areas. That is why K/1 critically look at materials, plan and draw diagrams, and then evaluate their design solutions.

Our latest solutions saw us create catapults for Jack from ‘Jack Be Nimble’ and protective gear for Humpty Dumpty.
