The Library

Welcome to the library!
Glenroy College Library is a safe learning environment whichopened in 2021, embracing the college ethos of encouraging students to become lifetime learners and develop a love of reading.
The fiction section is organised by genre to make it easier for students to browse the collection, which includes the latest middle grade and Young Adult literature, graphic novels and a manga section.
The library is open every day before and after school and at lunchtimes for borrowing, browsing and study. We encourage students to come in and find their next great read or get help with research and online projects. Come and say hi to Ms. DE LA PAZ!
Book Review:
The Humiliations of Welton Blake, by Alex Wheatle
Welton Blake has done it! He's asked out Carmella McKenzie - the best-looking girl in school - and she's only gone and said yes! But just as he thinks his luck is starting to change, Welton's phone breaks, kick-starting a series of unfortunate and humiliating events.
With bullies to avoid, girls ready to knock him out and all the drama with his mum and dad, life for Welton is about to go very, very wrong.
The ultimate joy of reading this book is very much wrapped up in its cliff-hanger chapters, the awful villains, the hapless hero – in fact, all those traditional tropes that make for a really pleasurable read, and that includes the perfect happy ending.
Boys and girls alike from Years 7 – 9 especially will completely love this book!
Paraphrased from a review written by Ben Harris (Primary school teacher, Essex)

Chess Tips of the week:
Control the Centre: Focus on controlling the centre of the board, as it provides greater mobility for your pieces.
Develop Your Pieces: Prioritise developing your bishops and knights early in the game instead of moving pawns excessively.
Castle early: Castling not only protects your king but also brings one of your rooks into play. King safety is crucial because if your king is exposed, your opponent will have the advantage.
Did you know?
The word "checkmate" comes from the Persian phrase "Shah Mat," meaning "the King is dead". Chess is not just a game; it's a proven way to improve memory, rational thinking, and even intelligence.
