From our Principal

A letter from Mr. Andrew Arney

Athletics Carnival

Our recent House Athletics Competition was a fantastic day of energy, encouragement, and achievement. Students from all year levels came together to participate in a wide range of track and field events, showcasing not only their athletic talents but also their resilience and willingness to take on new challenges.

It was especially heartening to see so many students step outside their comfort zones and give unfamiliar events a go. Whether it was sprinting, high jump, or relays, our students showed great determination and a positive mindset. Their efforts were a powerful reminder of the growth that comes from persistence and trying something new.

Participation across year levels was outstanding, with students showing strong support for one another and embracing the spirit of healthy competition. The atmosphere was electric, filled with cheering, laughter, and encouragement from all corners of the

track.

The Blue Sharks emerged as the overall champions of the day, taking home their very first trophy! Their teamwork, enthusiasm, and strong performances across events earned them this well-deserved victory, and we congratulate every member of the Blue Sharks on this achievement.

High Expectations - Student Learning

At Glenroy College, we're all about helping our students thrive particularly in their VCE journey. We're not just focusing on the basics; we're creating a supportive environment where every student has the tools and encouragement to succeed. From personalised learning plans to hands-on support, our approach is all about making learning meaningful and accessible. The following list highlights some of the key strategies and initiatives we're implementing to boost VCE results and ensure our students are well-prepared for their future pathways;

  • Regular homework including practise exam questions

  • At risk notifications with a plan of how to catch-up/rectify the situation

  • Study habits and goal setting sessions by external providers in Personal Learning classes

  • Using an ‘expected study score behaviours’ rubric for students to self-assess against (including after progress reports to reset goals)

  • Attendance make-up hours – making up missed hours to get back near 80% and help with authentication

  • Multiple opt-in taster/career expo/events in different industries and Uni/TAFE tours.

  • Tuesday afternoon tutoring with Swinburne Uni students.

A key factor however in how students can acheive in their schooling is the supports student recieve at home. I often get asked for advice on how parents can support students in their learning, and these are some of the top things I aways come back to these 7:

  • Talk Often with Teachers - Stay in touch with your child’s teacher. Ask how your child is doing and how you can help at home.

  • Make a Good Place to Learn at Home - Give your child a quiet spot to do homework, with things like pencils, paper, and no loud distractions.

  • Keep a Daily Routine - Help your child have a regular schedule for homework, play, meals, and sleep.

  • Be Involved in School Life - Go to school events and meetings when you can. It shows your child that school is important.

  • Check How Your Child Is Doing - Look at report cards, COMPASS or teacher notes to see how your child is doing in school.

  • Encourage Trying and Learning - Tell your child it’s okay to make mistakes. Praise hard work, not just getting things right.

  • Read and Learn Together - Read with your child and talk about what they’re learning. Ask questions and show interest.
