Old Collegians
Last Friday, Mazenod College commemorated our annual Steven Tynan Memorial Assembly. This day pays tribute to the lives of our former Collegian, Steven Tynan, and his partner, Damien Eyre, who were killed whilst they were undertaking a routine patrol in Walsh Street, South Yarra, on 12 October, 1988.
On this day, our Mazenod College Community welcomed back our former Collegians, and one of our Parents, who work in our Emergency Services, including members of our Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, Paramedics, Fire Rescue Victoria, and Protective Service Officers. In addition, we welcomed back representatives of the Tynan Family, Steven’s sister, Sue Fitzgerald, and his niece, Niamh Fitzgerald. We listened to the story of both Steven and Damien’s immense sacrifices in giving their lives to keep us all safe, and this was followed by a moving video paying tribute to their lives.
Our community was humbled to hear the stories which our former Collegians and one of our Parents shared with us concerning their work in their Emergency Services. Our former Collegian, and the former Assistant Commissioner of Victoria Police, Stephen Fontana, shared with us his insights into ensuring that we all look after our own mental and physical health, as well as checking in with each other. His message was to ensure that we look after one another. We need to ask each other, “R U, OK?”
On behalf of our Mazenod College Community, we extend our sincerest thanks to all our wonderful Emergency Service Workers for their sacrifices, service, diligence and commitment to keeping everyone safe.
