28th Sunday of Ordinary Time

From Sunday’s reading, we heard from the book of Wisdom 7:7-11 that the value of divine wisdom surpasses wealth, power, and even health. The writer emphasises that wisdom, a gift from God, is more valuable than all material possessions. This gift calls us to seek God’s guidance above all earthly gains, understanding that true wealth lies in knowing God’s will and living by it.

Hebrews 4:12-13 reminds us of the power of God’s word, which penetrates deep into our hearts and minds, revealing our true thoughts and intentions. Nothing is hidden from God’s sight, which should prompt us to live with integrity, knowing that we are fully known and loved by our Creator.

In Mark 10:17-30, Jesus challenges the rich young man to give up his possessions and follow Him. This story teaches us that attachment to material things can prevent us from fully committing to God’s call. Jesus reminds us that eternal life is not earned through wealth or status but through a heart surrendered to God’s will and a life of service to others.

These readings call us to seek wisdom, live with transparency before God, and prioritise our spiritual journey over earthly riches. True fulfilment comes when we align our lives with God’s purposes, trusting His word and wisdom will guide us to eternal life.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I pray that I may come to You day by day with an attitude of helpless, trusting dependence… joyful hope, a teachable spirit - a heart that is open to the truth of the gospel and a teachable mind that is open to all that You would have me learn and understand. May I decrease and You increase in my life, and may I grow in grace to Your praise and glory - in Jesus’ name I pray, AMEN.
