Sandhurst Divisional Intermediate Sports Day

On Tuesday 3 September, Year 9 and 10 students participated in the Sandhurst Divisional Intermediate Sports Day, competing in basketball, hockey and table tennis. The event showcased our students' remarkable talent and teamwork.

  • Basketball: Both the boys' and girls' basketball teams exhibited impressive skills and determination throughout the tournament. They won three out of their four games, securing second place in their respective pools. Despite their strong performance, they were ultimately outpaced by the overall winners, CMC. A huge thank you to Mr McConville and Mr McCarthy for their exceptional coaching and preparation leading up to and during the event.

  • Hockey: The girls' hockey team delivered a spirited performance in their two matches. As a new team with only one member having previous competitive experience, their athleticism and determination kept them competitive until the final whistle. Although the team did not secure a win, their positive attitude and high spirits were a testament to the fact that they had a great day. Special thanks to Miss White and James Trotter for their coaching expertise and support.

  • Table Tennis: In table tennis, we entered two boys' teams: Girton Maroon and Girton Gold. Both teams demonstrated their skill and strategic play, positioning themselves as strong contenders. In a thrilling grand final, Girton Maroon faced off against BSE. With a composed and dominant performance, Girton Maroon emerged victorious, claiming the top prize! Congratulations and best wishes to the team for the upcoming Loddon Mallee Regional Finals. A big thank you to Mr Williams for his invaluable guidance and coaching throughout the tournament.

Overall, it was a fantastic day of sportsmanship and competition. Congratulations to all our students for their outstanding performances and efforts.

ICCES Chess Competition

On Tuesday 30 July, 12 members of the Girton Chess Club travelled to Bacchus Marsh Grammar School to compete in the ICCES Chess Competition. This was a much-anticipated event for the Girton Chess Team as the competition is challenging and fun, and we get to meet fellow chess enthusiasts from other regional schools. In Chess Club we have been working on our skills in preparation for this competition. Our team included a number of players who had competed in previous competitions and were able to help the younger students understand the tournament rules and pass on some useful strategies.

This tournament required all players to play seven games within their age division of Juniors (Years 7 and 8), Intermediates (Years 9 and 10) or Seniors (Years 10, 11 and 12).

The Senior Team was made up of four Year 10 students who played against more experienced students from Years 11 and 12.

The Junior Team comprised Neel Girish (7 Frew), Mathew Henry (8 Frew), Michael Huangfu (7 Jenkin) and Ryan Norman (8 Frew). The team performed phenomenally, ranking first in their age division. All four players from the Junior Team ended up in the top five, which was a very respectable result as none of them had lost more than two games out of their seven.

Mathew Henry 54

Ryan Norman 5.53

Our Intermediate Team comprised Michael Ma (9 Millward), Harshal Belrage (9 Riley), Alvin Chen (9 Millward) and Michael Scanlon (9 Riley). They valiantly competed against strong teams from the other schools, facing some stiff competition. As a younger group, they are to be commended for their spirit and determination.

The Senior Team had a very successful performance, ranking second in their division. The team comprised Rory Clarke (10 Jones), Dale Every (10 Aherne), Darcy Steel (10 Millward) and Hunter Scholes (10 Millward). All four players were tournament veterans, with most having a rich history playing in tournaments for the school since their first year of enrolment. This year they faced some of the most challenging competition they had experienced in any tournament, after nominating themselves to play in an age division above their own so the school could have a senior team qualify. All four players are commended for their impressive consistency to win on average 4/7 games. Rory Clarke, the highest achiever of the group, won an astounding six out of seven games and is acknowledged for his commitment.

Mrs Kristenson is thanked for the support and organisation she provided to ensure we were all prepared for this year's competition. The Girton Chess Club is very pleased with this performance and we are all looking forward to similar success at our next competition, the Mount Alexander Chess Challenge.

Sandhurst Basketball Carnival

Congratulations to the students in the Year 5 and 6 teams who competed at the annual Sandhurst Basketball Carnival on Friday 6 September.

Our girls were competitive from the start and played a great team game with some very nice set plays and shooting. They finished the day on top of their pool and progressed to a semi-final, where they were unfortunately beaten by a stronger Maiden Gully.

Our boys won four games and lost one. They finished second in their pool and narrowly missed out on making the finals. Some great teamwork and encouragement was shown all day.

Thank you to Charli Laity and Dullee Siriwardana for helping on the day. Also to the parents who supported us during the games and with transport.

Mr Paul Flanagan and Mr Mark Di Fede
