Year 1

Ms Harrington, Ms Zaikis, Ms Rischitelli, Ms Maher, Ms Ripper, Mr Ritchie and Ms Bowden

Phonics

In Phonics, we have been continuing to learn long vowel phonemes-graphemes as well as r controlled phoneme-graphemes such as ar (art party) and or (sports shorts). When we learn a new sound we always practise the skills of segmenting and blending words with the new sounds as well as writing them on their own and in phrases and sentences.

Writing & Knowledge

In Writing, we are learning the structure of a narrative. We have linked this with our Knowledge unit (fairy tales) where we have been learning about identifying the elements of a fairy tale, such as characters, settings, problem and solution! We have loved reading different fairytales and identifying the elements. Some of the fairy tales we have read so far are Rapnuzel, Sleeping Beauty, Rumplestilskin and The Frog Prince. We will begin having a go at writing our very own narratives, first by planning our characters, setting, problem and solution and then writing our story with a beginning, middle and end.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have been working hard at understanding and solving worded problems. For example, for the worded problem “12 lollies are shared equally between 3 people, how many will each person get?”, we know we need to use our knowledge on sharing equally and share a collection of objects between 3 groups. We have also been practising our fast facts (number bonds to 10 and addition and subtraction within 20) and really enjoy working against the timer and trying to beat our time each time we do it! We are getting faster and faster which is fantastic. We have also been learning about time and duration, understanding that different tasks in our day take different amounts of time. Some things can take only seconds to complete, like waving hello to a friend, whereas other things can take a long time, like watching a movie or sleeping at night.

SEL and Auslan

In SEL, we have been continuing to explore Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness (GEM) and Emotional Literacy. We have been doing so by identifying our emotions and learning how to communicate our feelings through body language and what it can look like. This has linked really well with our AUSLAN learning, because we are also learning how to sign feelings and match that with our facial expressions.
