Dear Parents and Carers,
At Gilgai Plains Primary, academic success and growth for every student is a priority goal. Mastering skills in literacy and numeracy contribute to a positive self image and a sense of accomplishment, which are essential for mental wellbeing. Research has shown that there is a correlation between students’ positive mental health, engagement and relationships, and their academic outcomes. When students experience academic success, it not only enhances their knowledge and skills but also boosts their self-esteem and confidence. In order to communicate effectively and make informed decisions, a strong foundation in literacy is essential.
Every year, Victorian students in Years 4 - 6 take part in the Attitudes To School Survey. The survey provides data that is invaluable in understanding the student perspective of their school and provides schools with information to support efforts in improving the schooling experience. I would like to share some of the results from the recent survey. Our school scored higher than State, Similar Schools and Network Schools in almost every question.
We are extremely proud of these recent results, as they are evidence of the great work being done by our staff and students. You will see in the table above that our students have ranked highly for “Sense of Confidence” at 81%. This links to our recent Naplan results which illustrated that our students are experiencing academic success and this correlates well with what the research is telling us. Children feel confident when they succeed.
I have been asked recently what it is that our school is doing to be achieving such positive results. It has led us as a leadership team, to really think about and delve deep into our practices. I think that it is a number of things, including the relationships built between staff, students and parents, the high expectations we hold for each individual student, explicit teaching and a consistent focus on our values, vision and our mission statement.
