Secondary Community News

Lower Secondary (Years 7-8)

The 7/8’s have a wonderful end to Term 3! Students finished off their learning this week, through participating in lots of hands-on activities. Students have enjoyed participating in their Inquiry unit - “What’s the Matter?”, by exploring the relationship between solids, liquids and gases. Students have enjoyed making slime, Oobleck and pancakes as a part of this unit and can successfully identify what happens when we mix solids and liquids together.

Students ended the term off by participating in RUOK? Day activities. Students enjoyed the different activities and engaging together.

Well done on a great term, 7/8s!

Upper Secondary (Years 9-10)

This week we celebrated RU OK day. Students enjoyed wearing yellow and checking in on their friends. We had a day full of activates like a scavenger hunt, face painting and games. We also had a school wide sausage sizzle!

9/10C launched the trial run of our café, and it was a success. We look forward to starting service for week two. Students made Burrito Bowls, and the feedback was excellent! Staff loved the delicious food - Congratulations Team, Great work!

9/10D went on an excursion to Watergardens and 9/10A&B went on an excursion to Highpoint. As a reward for all their hard work, students not only enjoyed playing bowling & laser tag. They also had the opportunity to learn teamwork in a different environment.

What is the ASDAN Program?

ASDAN is an accredited program for young people with special educational needs. It provides opportunities to develop and practice skills that prepare the young person to be as independent as possible. The students participate in supported travel training, work experience and community access programs that promote the development of independent living skills. It is a flexible program that allows students to experience the world beyond school and develop their personal interests, skills and future pathways.

Travel Training

Students participate in journey planning and learn how to use the PTV application. They learn about safe road and public transport usage and how to solve basic problems that may arise when traveling.

Supported Work Experience

Students participate in supported work experience, learning important daily living skills such as sweeping, raking, planting and watering. There is a focus on improving listening skills and the ability to follow instructions.

Students learn about safety in the workplace and develop employability skills.

Community Access

This program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to explore a wide variety of free and low-cost services available in the local community. Students visit council libraries, shopping centres, health and fitness providers and other places of interest.

The hope is to support students to develop their own interests, deepen social connections and increase self-confidence.

What a good term it has been! Both ASDAN classes have continued to work at Westvale and Sunshine Hospital where they have planted flowers, watered, weeded and tidied up around the communal areas for the patients to enjoy. At Westvale students have continued to grow and harvest a range of produce. At school classes have been working hard addressing ASDAN outcomes. Well done ASDAN.

Senior Secondary – Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC)

VPC students have been busy working on their resume, cover letter and interview skills this term.

In preparation for their upcoming mock interview with a community volunteer, students have been identifying their skills, experiences and any qualification/s they have, to meet the selection criteria and pitch why they are the best person for the job they had chosen.

We look forward to the mock interviews next week and seeing the students speak confidently about themselves.

Update:

VPC students have completed their mock interviews with a sense of achievement and boost of confidence. It was fantastic to see their confidence grow over the project and some students were asking to do it again because they enjoyed it so much.

Congratulations VPC students!
