Dear Mordialloc College Community,

As we approach the end of another enriching academic year at Mordialloc College, we reflect on the strides we've made in the realm of Literacy. Our commitment to fostering a culture of learning and literacy excellence has been at the forefront of our efforts, and we are delighted to report significant achievements.

Science of Reading Approach: A Foundation for Success

Mordialloc College has embraced a Science of Reading approach to Literacy, recognising how the brain learns to decode and comprehend written language. A Science of Reading approach draws on findings from cognitive science, linguistics and educational research to inform instructional practices. The Science of Reading is widely recognised for its effectiveness in teaching all students, including those with dyslexia or other reading difficulties. This methodical approach ensures that our students receive the best possible foundation for developing strong reading and writing skills. Staff will continue to embed these practices across Learning Areas in 2024 to form a consistent foundation for students’ Literacy growth.

NAPLAN Excellence: Above State Average in Reading and Writing

Our students' dedication and hard work have been reflected in the 2023 NAPLAN results. Mordialloc College achieved above the state average in both Reading and Writing categories. This is a testament to the collaborative efforts of our students, teachers, and the entire school community.

Continued Literacy Intervention Programs

Our commitment to inclusivity and personalised learning is evident through our continued investment in Literacy intervention programs. This includes targeted initiatives for MYLNS funded students, ensuring that every student receives the support they need to thrive academically.

The Tutor Learning Initiative, which introduced extra tutors into English classes, has been a success, providing additional resources to deliver invaluable support to students who require extra assistance, fostering a positive and collaborative learning environment. This program continues to be funded by the State Government and will continue into 2024.

Tracking Growth with PAT-Reading Assessments

At Mordialloc College, we believe in the power of data to drive improvement. This year, we continued to use PAT-Reading assessments to systematically track the growth of our students throughout the academic year. The assessments not only showcased overall progress but also allowed us to compare our cohorts to national norm reference data, which showed that our students were above the national norm for all year levels.

This data-driven approach has empowered our teachers to target key skills in individual students and tailor their teaching strategies to address specific needs. As we prepare for the upcoming year, this information will serve as a valuable tool for refining our curriculum and ensuring that every student receives the support necessary for their academic journey.

In closing, we extend our gratitude to our dedicated students, passionate educators, and supportive community for contributing to the success of our Literacy initiatives. Together, we look forward to building on these achievements and continuing to foster a culture of excellence at Mordialloc College.

Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable holiday season.
