Inquiry  Mapping - School Closure Day on Wednesday 6th December

Inquiry is a dynamic, responsive approach to teaching and learning. Contexts for inquiry are most effective when they provide opportunities to meet achievement standards but also when they are authentic and relevant to the needs and interests of students.

Upon our school closure with Kath Murdoch, teachers will take on the task of mapping pathways for learning for 2024. This mapping will help us ensure we link student learning to the curriculum and allow both teachers to gather resources, integrate the curriculum and find people and places that will help make our inquiries engaging and worthwhile.

At St. Fidelis, we value students' voices in helping teachers plan relevant and purposeful inquiries. As part of our day,  the students shared their thoughts on the big questions they found most engaging in 2023. They also shared their thoughts on what we should inquire into next year.

Teachers and leaders will take the work from our school closure day and create links to the inquiries with scripture, English and Numeracy curriculum and school events for 2024. We are looking forward to inquiring into the big questions for next year.

SPORT & PE - Michael Jennings

The St Fidelis' Annual Sports Day was held on Thursday 30 November 2023 at St Fidelis' Primary School. Unfortunately, the wet weather conditions on the day didn’t allow us to conduct a ‘normal’ program, however, everyone adapted well to the new format, and a lot of fun and excitement was had by all.

The students are to be congratulated for their wonderful behaviour, personal effort and team spirit on the day. The cheering from each team was amazing and very LOUD!!!!

Thank you to the teachers for their organisation of the students and games.

Special congratulations to our school sports leaders for their support and guidance to all the year levels and assistance to me. They did a magnificent job!

Final Team Results:

1st  DALY (RED) 970 points

2nd LEE (GOLD) 930 points

3rd  MACKILLOP (BLUE) 700 points

4th MANNIX (GREEN) 680 points

Congratulations to the  DALY RED Team on achieving the most points this year.

All four teams have now won this event in the last 5 years!!!!

At the conclusion of our Sports Day, the Year 6 students played a match of ‘Volleystars’ against the staff. It was a very skillful, close and exciting game for the teams to play and the crowd to watch.  The Year 6 students are to be commended on their sporting behaviour and teamwork. They never gave in and came very close to upsetting the teachers.

After a slow start, the teachers came away with a very close win, 15:12, and 15:12.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Harry who was invited to join U11 Essendon Royals for the Junior Super League tournament that ran over 8 weeks from October to December. This is an invitation-only tournament, providing a high-quality competition for select NPL clubs. Harry’s team won the grand final on Saturday to claim the Division 1 title, a huge achievement!

STEM Scienceworks/Melbourne Museum- Design Sprint Excursion

24 students from Years 3 to 5 participated in the Scienceworks/Melbourne Museum Design Sprint excursion on Wednesday 29th of November 2023. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to prepare for the future, showing them how they can make a difference in the world.

Students and teachers were immersed in a day-long, fast-paced STEM design challenge with a human-centred and optimistic approach to "design a better world". Students and teachers received hands-on with the technology materials to begin making and prototyping physical solutions to real problems. Design sprints offer students a meaningful STEM learning with a wellbeing lens. On the day, students and teachers were supported to explore with Scienceworks’ staff, and met experts in science, design, and technology to understand the problem being tackled, and the approaches that might help solve authentic problems.

Students collaborated and generated their own design briefs such as:

  • Design ways to encourage activeness and fun to help reduce depression and anxiety at school by using MicroBits games, 3D-printing and LEGO.
  • Design ways to encourage kindness to help students at school by using MicroBits and sensors.
  • Design ways to encourage teamwork and collaboration to help students and children to work as a team at school by using LEGO.
  • Design ways to encourage curiosity to help bordmen at school by using a robot that you can tell your interests and it gives you ideas based on them.
  • Design ways to encourage students and teachers to help the love of learning at school by using a MicroBit, 3D printer to design and create a robot.

Our Students in their teams collaborated, explored, engaged, designed, created a prototype and shared their learning about how we can better "design a better world". Design sprints offer students a meaningful and enduring STEM learning experience with a social justice and well-being dimension.
