Student Achievement : Edie Simpson
Representing Australia in Canoe Polo
Congratulations to Year 10 student Edie Simpson, who has recently been selected to play Canoe Polo for Australia. Edie told us a little bit about the sport and her journey to playing at international level:
Canoe polo is a contact sport played in specialised kayaks on a sports field that's roughly the size of a 25 meter pool. The goals are elevated and no, we don't use our paddles to flick the ball (although you can, it's just not accurate). There are 5 on a team and 8 on a squad. Although there is only 10 minute halves it is a fast paced game with a shock clock.
I have been playing canoe polo for several years and have recently been lucky enough to be selected to play for the Australian Team. We will be competing in the International 2023 Oceania Canoe Polo Championships in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand and the Inter-regional Championships (Oceania pre-competition), Palmerston North, New Zealand. We play in kayaks on rivers and lakes all over the Australia (I been to Ballarat playing for Victoria in the 2023 Canoe Polo Nationals, Queensland for Australian selection competition, NSW for the Australian training camp and Ireland so far this year).
I love polo for many reasons, such as the community that's gathered to represent and play together. I am very proud to be able to represent my county in a sport I love with my team mates with me.
A fantastic achievement Edie! Good luck in New Zealand.
